When I turn on the key and hit the start button my lights just go dim. The starter doesn't even try to spin . Battery is brand new AGM and is 12 + volts. The horn is loud. any thoughts?

Do you hear a "Click"?? First need to check the starter solenoid. Should be mounted to the back side of the battery box.

Try this. Do make sure you have the kill switch off. And don't be standing above or looking in to the spark plug holes when you hit the starter.

Try jumper lead onto starter terminal (+) then direct to battery. (make sure the earth (-) is good too. If you wont turn over you have a starter motor problem. Easy to remove and service. I did mine in under a 1/2 hour. The planetary gearboxes dry out. Give it a good grease.

Another thought is the interlock system will not let the starter engage. Try pulling the clutch leaver and hit the start button.

What bike are you working on?

Just check that the engine will turn over by rocking it backwards and forward in top gear first as it may be a locked up engine. Mine had sat for 27 years and surface rust in the bore caused it to lock up. I rocked it back and forth (with oil and WD-40 in the bore) until I freed it up. It runs well now with no strip down. Just make sure the motors OK before you try my direct to starter motor deal. Good luck.
