water pump

Post by rooster4321 »

75 gl1000 I am replacing my water pump and read all the shop talk about it . Ordered new pump and gasket kit. Its recommended to replace the Phillips head screws with hex, is there a source or just ace hardware? also should they be steel, stainless steel or aluminum? what kind of lube for the o rings and or gaskets?

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

You can get them at any good hardware store.

I got all mine at the local Ace.

I went with stainless.

Just use caution when tightening them. Using hex head it is very easy to over tighten them and strip out the case, Also over compressing the front cover gasket can result in shift linkage binding.

If you use a torque wrench properly can you still do that?

In addition to the ShopTalk thread, I recommend reading Randakks thread on the subject. Pay particular attention to the 'Bingo method'. It works. You have your answers above regarding fastener replacement. Any type of lube will work fine including Vaseline. I lubed all of the O rings and gaskets as well. Some will say gaskets 'dry'. That's their preference. When you insert your new pump, be careful not to pinch the O ring. Lube all surfaces. Don't miss the 8.0 X 1.9 O ring around the dowel in the upper right corner. It's critical. Use a 'Diagram' as seen on Randakks site to keep track of your parts. Very helpful.

The trans cover bolts are 6mm. Standard torques on that size bolt is ~90 lbs-in. Use that and you should be good. There is a range usually from about 80 to 100 or so. But stay with 90 for all 6mm and you'll be happy. And use a good torque wrench. Also, use anti-seize on stainless steel bolts going in the aluminum.

Consider having your tank cleaned and pressure tested by a radiator shop. The metal on these tanks is thin and the 'in' and 'out' coolant tube joints take a lot of abuse from PO's replacing hoses. Ask the shop to re-solder those joints.

I would not, but if you do be sure to put an anti seize on them!!

I have used the Honda bolts for the later bikes, fit like they are made for the job, no worries.....
