81 GL1100 Carburetor trouble...

#1

Post by Cadillac Kid »

So I was disassembling my carbs to do the Randakk rebuild. Took all the vacuum chambers off and found that the #4 carb vacuum piston does not move freely in the vacuum chamber. 1 2 and 3 move freely from top to bottom of chamber. 4 piston moves freely only about 3/4" and then sticks as it goes higher in the chamber. It gets progressively more stuck the higher in the chamber it goes.

Do I need a whole new #4 carb or just the chamber and piston? Is this correctable without having to swap any parts? I lubed the rim of the piston and inner wall of chamber but that changed nothing.

How far does the piston actually move within the chamber while running? Does it need the full length of the chamber?

I believe they're run dry. I there corrosion in the chamber? Try polishing both the piston and chamber with aluminum foil. Someone with more experience will be along shortly.

Usually it's a ding in the vacuum top. Any rough treatment on the outside of the cap (top) results in distortion of the top's interior. Prove this by swapping that slide to a different top and that top to a different slide. The top can't be corrected. Sanding destroys the necessary close tolerance. The good news us there are boatloads of used tops available.

Ok. Got a replacement chamber and piston. It is the old piston that is defective.... only problem is the new piston has a bad needle. Can they be swapped/removed? The needle on my old piston is fine.
