Charging System

Hey guys, I have obviously talked dirty to my girl. She did not want to start this morning. Battery I think has gone kapoot.

Idle charging 13V

3k rpm + charging is 15v

What is the range on the charging system for the GL1000?

Sounds like you are in the ball park. A little high in both ends. Have a load test performed on the battery. Beyond that check the regulator

charge your battery and then recheck you may not be running
it enough to keep the battery fully charged

If you are charging consistently over 15V, that negatively impacts battery life.

You really want to be closer to 14.7

I would also double check your readings with another meter

If the other meter also shows higher than "normal" voltages, be sure to check your ground connections as well.

And don't forget to check the regulator (its role is to evacuate the surplus of the electricity made by the alternator if I remember well)

engine off key off 12.6+ (13 + would be indicative of a fully charged new battery)
key on engine at idle 13.2+
key on engine at 3k rpm 14.2 to 14.8

Yea, I think my battery is fried. Plus the voltage regulator is out. I charge it out of the bike and install it and the battery will crank it over once then it no longer has enough juice. I can't check the charging system until I get that fixed. I am with jdvorchak. It is at 15v, which is just at the limit. Currently looking for a voltage regulator and a battery.

One thing that is relatively common is for the regulator to get an incorrect reference voltage. Since the regulator is external, it is reading the battery voltage via a black wire that has several connections. If these are corroded, you can get a voltage drop. The end result is that the voltage regulator allows more charge voltage to compensate, and you cook your battery.

With this bike running, read the voltage going into the regulator on the black wire. if it is equivalent to battery voltage, this isn't your problem. If it is 14.7 while the battery is 15V, you have your culprit.

A good fix is to upgrade to a rectifier with an internal regulator. Much more reliable.
