Neutral Switch, Why have it?

#1

Post by Lads »

I am freshening my 75 GL as part of my naked project. I have seen a lot of good suggestions to clean/replace the troublesome neutral switch while I have good access. This leads me to a question, why have it? I have seen where it acts as a rev limiter in neutral but is there another purpose?

On a GL it does not act like a rev limiter. At least not the 1000/1100/1200. If there were no system at all the bike would start in gear without the clutch disengaged. Not good. If you just bypassed the switch I think you would have to pull the clutch lever in to start the bike at any time. Unless you also bypass the clutch switch. Which would again let the bike start in gear.

If you always start the bike with the clutch lever pulled in it may not be necessary. But what about when someone else needs to start it? It is a safety deal that works. IMO

Also neutral is half way between 1st and 2nd. The lets you know that you have gone just the right distance, and you won't be surprised when you let the clutch out

Don't know about another use. But, if it doesn't work, I don't think it will pass inspection...at least in VA.

I'm trolling this topic to ask specialists a question about neutral switch
Each time I ride my wing, if I must change down a gear to negociate a junction or a roundabout, if I change from 2 to 1, sometimes my engine stops. And I need to return to the neutral to start again the engine...
Can this happened due to a "sick" neutral switch, maybe coated by rust or something else in the gearbox?

I would not suspect the switch, but would suspect a diode

I would suspect the clutch switch. You should be able to start in any gear, if you have the clutch pulled.

wasn't a huge deal back in the kickstart days but way more problematic with e-starts
