78 GL1000 charging system
Hello all,
recently I have been having a charging issue with my 78. I have already replaced the battery with a tested brand new one, and soldered the stator plug wires together (even though the plug looked fine).
The bike is only reading 12.5 volts when running and only raises to 12.8 when revved to 3000 RPM. I have probed the stator wires while running and get a solid 6.5 volts out of all three wires. I followed this guide for reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOG_nmnRT5k
I have also swapped out the rectifier that is next to the battery with no change and also the 12v regulator with no change....What am I missing and what should I look at next?
Update, I tested the voltage from the red wire that comes off the rectifier, the voltage reads .5 volt higher there then the battery. The battery will read 12.5 and the rectifier will be 13 volts...

The voltage out of the stator, yellow wire to yellow wire, engine running above 1500RPM should be 50v AC. Al combinations

So 11.8 across every combo of the three wires means time for a new stator?CYBORG wrote:The voltage out of the stator, yellow wire to yellow wire, engine running above 1500RPM should be 50v AC. Al combinations

Re: 78 GL1000 charging system
You need to measure AC voltage. And is better with the wires disconnected from the rest of the system, measuring straight off of the stator. And IF you are measuring 11.8 VAC with the engine running above 1500RPM, yes, the stator is bad. But it sounds more like you are measuring on DC, and not AC. And maybe from each yellow wire to ground. You are measuring battery voltage

The 11.8 volts reading was at idle testsing against each of the three wires, no ground and measuring ac. I will disconnect them and try again at higher rpm.CYBORG wrote:You need to measure AC voltage. where are you reading this? if it is the stock gauge, they can be inaccurate

Re: 78 GL1000 charging system
then that should be accurate. This summer when the stator went on our 1200, we were only getting that at the battery. But still check the yellow wires as cyborg mentions.
Unfortunately, these bikes are 30+ years old and parts do wear out. Unfortunately, OEM stators are not available, only aftermarket ones

Re: 78 GL1000 charging system
I found a few new aftermarket stators for ~$100 on ebay.... I also am looking in to the "poorboy" alternator conversions, but I cant find to much info for the gl1000. I also am not sure if I want a big ol' alternator hanging out the side of my bike .CYBORG wrote:Good used ones are still available for the budget minded.

Denso makes some nice little 40 amp alt. I use one on CYBORG, and have been very happy with it. A one wire system with built in regulator, makes the electrical hook up real easy

Maybe you can post up some pics of it with some more info (part #'s, etc.)? It would be great to see some more info on this conversion for a 1000.CYBORG wrote:Denso makes some nice little 40 amp alt. Re: 78 GL1000 charging system
I can't do pictures, but there are a number of pictures on the site already of CYBORG. It was bike of the year in2009. The alt. I used came from John Deere, but summit racing sells some very nice ones designed for hot rod conversions. A number of small cars also use them. I would check for a good used one at a local salvage yard. I made the crank pulley from one I got at farm supply store. If you posses even minor mechanical skills, you can do it

If I just replace the stator, what other parts are required for the job?
