Replacing the driveshaft

#1

Post by jaycowan »

Hello all, I'm getting ready to swap out drive shafts from my parts bike to my nekkid one! I cant seem to find the pics on this job? At the end of the season the bike came to a grinding halt and wouldn't even go into gear, so I'm hoping it is the shaft that failed!? What do I need to watch for, what special tools, what should I replace while its apart? Although its still -20 Celsius, the weather HAS to change soon and I'd like to be ready!!
Any, and all, help greatly appreciated as usual!

Maybe someone here will show a link to the Honda gl1000 shop manual on this site. This is my favorite Goldwing site. On Classic GoldWings, the manual is easy to find and goes thru the process clearly>> http://www.classicgoldwings.com/forum/g ... um_id=1908 << You may have to register there. They seem to be all about single carbs and adding C5 ignitions. Their choice. Also this in our Shoptalk covers the subject >>> http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11325 The driveshaft universal can be inspected by pulling the rubber boot forward carefully and slowly spinning it (or moving the rear wheel around.) Mine looked pretty awful and I had no shifting problems.
I need to remember to keep my expectations tiny so I don't end up so whiny.

You need a quality pair of 90 degree snap ring pliers and a set of straight long slender snap ring pliers. You need some Moly grease for the splines and I like to replace the snap rings as a caution. I think that is about it.

Remove the wheel and the final drive, Slide the rubber boot one way or another to gain access to the front of the shaft. Find and remove the snap ring holding the UJoint to the engine output shaft

Once that is out then slide the shaft back far enough to disconnect it from the engine.
Then clean out the rear of the shaft/ copupling where it attaches to the final drive and remove the inside snap ring that holds the coupling to the back of the Drive shaft. Once that rear coupling is off the shaft should slide out the front of the swing arm.

Make sure to clean all the splines and lube with the Moly Paste prior to reassembly.

That's right. I had blocked out removing the swingarm. I had to pull the stock muffler to get enough clearance for the swingarm removal.

Fantastic!! Thanks a million guys! I'll try and save these pics to make it easier out in the garage!! I'm sure the replacement snap rings are mentioned somewhere on this site, so I'll try and have those ready! I'll let everyone know how I made out. I'm probably going to piece out the parts bike, so I'll make a list of what is available!
Thanks again

you say it came to a stop. Did you pull back the boot and looked at the u-joint? It will be obvious if that has failed.

As for replacements, sad to say about 4-5 years ago Honda dc'd new ones. The first couple of years the u-joints had a much higher failure rate. Honda upgraded it in 77.... so on fleabay, look for one from a later bike

I replaced my drive shaft without having to remove the swingarm. If you release the c clips on both ends, and angle the swingarm down, the drive shaft will come out toward the front of the swingarm.
I found the end of the internet
