Rebuild 83 front forks parts list

#1

Post by ericheath »

Looking for suggestions from the experts as to what parts to include in rebuilding a set of 83 front forks. Honda still sells a front forks seal kit, #37 below. These forks have 90 k miles and look poor. I haven't disassembled them yet, but prefer to have parts on hand when I do. It is pretty expected to put new slider bushings in, #13 below. What about the bush (#12 below) for the fork pipe?

Anyone know of other things I should plan on replacing besides these? The Trac mechanism/system? I hope to put new Progressive springs in and lose the air control.

As always, much thanks in advance, Eric

Hey Eric,
Watching this thread in case my 83 front end needs attention sometime down the road...

I'll be interested in which weight Progressive springs you use and how they improve things...

How do you plan to block off the air openings?

That's it, and I would replace it. I usually do both when I do 1100 forks.

Costs keep going up. I'm trying to do it right, but I am also hoping to have enough left to try a C5 on this one.

I hadn't noticed before, but it appears the 83 had the TRAC on both forks? The Magna forks just did one side, hence JBz comments are true. It looks like a good $100 to rebuild them, nearly another $100 for springs.grrrr

My 83 has the TRAC on both forks and yeah the cost can add up quick but it's best to do it right the first time...... which is what I should've done with mine. I rebuilt the TRAC system and got it working properly on mine as well as replaced the fork seals but I got cheap and didn't replace any of the slider bushings and I now wish I had because I'll probably be taking them apart again to do so.

Thanks for that. That's what I hope to avoid. I am going to order all suggested then decide in the stuff inside the Trac mechanism when I pull it apart.

if you are real careful the trac systym shouldn't need any parts other than the dust seals and you should be able to reuse the rubber gaskets. If you take it apart to get the grunge out of the bottom the allens are usually locktited and stiff to get out.Be careful you don't loose the small spring and checkball for the 1 to 4 adjuster. If the 1 to 4 adjuster doesnt have a click or you feel a detent between 1 and 4 that means they are not in there...... and the trac wont work properly. high mileage id replace the bushings and get off to other things. I could live without the progressive springs . jb

Then springs feel pretty tired. Will air be enough to make it ride decently

5 or 6psi of air makes a world of difference but I believe the normal setting is much higher than that for the 1100s.............You would have to play with it......jb

It is amazing how prices stack up, but if you strip it down and do everything properly, you will have peace of mind, and hopefully will last years! That's the problem with old bikes, everything will need changing eventually!

anim-cheers1
Previous Rides,
1980 CB250N Good to learn on
1981 CX500 good mid range tourer, went to Austria on it!
1983 GL1100C Pride and joy, sold when I bought my 1st house, big mistake
1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter
1989 Suzuki GS750 (1976) cheap and cheerful until a dog ran out in front of me on Xmas Eve, 1991
Current bikes
2010 CB1300 back on a bike after 19 years, two divorces, children grown up etc
1980 GL1100 NOW ON THE ROAD, still use CB1300.
