Brakes; getting closer. Opinion on pads and more
Looking at this set
To replace my current brakes Bought a torque wrench to get into the brakes. Noticed how the pads are crumbling apart; ordering now.
The discs don't feel bad but might replace while I'm at it. Might go slotted/drilled. Any recommendations?

Rather than Kevlar, I prefer the EBC semi-sintered pads. They were called "semi-metallic" back in the day. Better stoppage without sacrificing wear. Does not damage brake rotors as well.

Re: Brakes; getting closer. Opinion on pads and more
My pads of choice are EBC, but sure others will have their own favourites.
Previous Rides,
1980 CB250N Good to learn on
1981 CX500 good mid range tourer, went to Austria on it!
1983 GL1100C Pride and joy, sold when I bought my 1st house, big mistake
1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter
1989 Suzuki GS750 (1976) cheap and cheerful until a dog ran out in front of me on Xmas Eve, 1991
Current bikes
2010 CB1300 back on a bike after 19 years, two divorces, children grown up etc
1980 GL1100 NOW ON THE ROAD, still use CB1300.

Why did you buy a torque wrench to get into your brakes? Surely you would be loosening stuff off.bonestock3 wrote:

My (limited) understanding, is that you shouldn't use a torque wrench as a normal lever, just for what it says on the tin!

I've been loyal EBC but at this price I had to ask.
I read a sticky on brake job and it was listed as a required tool; it'll come in handy eventually

Can't go wrong buying a torque wrench, only use it to tighten bolts though. Never to loosen. I'm on the EBC bus as well.

I had a pair of kevlar (ebc) on the back, did not last as long as I would have hoped. I would imagine they'd get ate up on the front.
I need to remember to keep my expectations tiny so I don't end up so whiny.

For what its worth I have those pads, almost 4K on them and still look pretty thick, had them off the other day to install the new front tire, stops rapid enough but who's to say whats enough.

Ha thanks! Only use to tighten not loosen - that's sound.

If it is the "clicker" type you should also set it to the lowest setting after you are finished using it. Don't put it back in the tool box with it still set to 80lbs-ft. (that's just a number I pulled from the air)
If it came in a case use it. Torque wrench's are fairly delicate and calibrated instruments. Some of the cost a lot of money. Take good care of it. Some say they should be recalibrated every few years.

Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but it seems I read somewhere the bar/pointer thingy were more accurate. Is this true?

The beam type has always been given that reputation. I won't say either way. But you do need to be careful with the way you store those too. I have both a beam type and 3 "clicker" type. The beam can be a pain to use at times. You do have to be able to see it directly to read it. Not always easy when working on an assembled bike.NCScooter wrote:Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but it seems I read somewhere the bar/pointer thingy were more accurate. Is this true?

I have a couple of the clicker type. Have had them for many years, and have had them checked a couple of times. They have not lost calabration over time. But I do keep them in the cases, and at the lowest setting when not in use

Brake pad choice is something very personal but which brake pad and why? I found this which makes for good reading and may influence your choice.

* thanks Was certainly an enlightening read, it seems Kevlar isn't the best option for every day use. Fondly appreciate ur sharing.ianstaley wrote:Brake pad choice is something very personal but which brake pad and why? I found this which makes for good reading and may influence your choice.

*it certainly is the clicker type. So store at lowest setting. Easy. Where would I take it to get recalibrated? What might cause them to lose calibration?robin1731 wrote:

I like keeping it in the case like some magic wand.
