gl1000: front brakes: banjo crush washers

Hi All- are the "sides" of the crusher fussy about which way they face? one side seems smooth the other side rougher and one edge rounded the other edge square cut..thxs kenai

They started out smooth on both sides. Over time the take the shape of the banjo. Many time's I've "sanded" them a little to make them some what flat again. Just a clean up really.

Crush washers, like most any flat stock item, are manufactured by stamping, which typically rounds the top edge, and sharpens the bottom edge. It should not affect the seal, although if used multiple times, crush washers can lose their 'elasticity.' Personally, when I'm being kind of obsessive, I make sure to place the 'sharp' edge down. But that's me...

+1 on the obsessiveness! I always put flat washers with the flat side down! I figure that's why the call them "flat" washers!

I'm with the Trackman on this. Whether they are copper or aluminum (oil drain plug) it's the softness that makes them work. Shouldn't matter which side goes where but once they've been used, replacement is something to think about.

just take a look how most of our oil drain bolt crush washer mushrooms over time. They are pretty cheap, doesn't hurt to replace them occasionally (IMHO)
