The 83A I think it was has overdrive. Other than that I think the only difference is the jets in the carbs are movable in the 82-83. Maybe some minor stuff but nothing to stop an engine swap.

The engine to secondary drive was changed on the 83 to reduce engine RPM at speed. 1st gear was made lower to compensate on take off. the result of this is the 5th gear on the 83 is now an overdrive. I think you'll find with the 81 engine you will be running about 500 rpm higher in 5th at highway speeds.

On my 81 60mph = 4000 RPM in 5th... Then again, it's right on the cams at that speed so ready for a burst to pass without a downshift.
I read in the 20th Anniversary Goldwing book that the 80-81 were the lightest and quickest GLs made. Quickest must mean only for the 4-cylinder bikes though...

And the clutch for 1100's.... when did the change to hydraulic actuation happen?

Also location of the neutral switch?

No Hydro clutch on the 11s, all cable. Neutral switch changed to the front cover in '83 model

It should be. Even though the 80-81 had a higher first gear, they were mated with a 17" tire. Your 83 will have a 16" tire. You'll just gain a few extra rpms in 5th gear. They should be pretty close.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Ummmm, no. The 82 had the neutral switch on the front cover, single wire. Mine is a Standard. (Also came with self-canceling turn signals, which means the speedo has a two wire speed sensor added.)

83 (my 83 donor was an Interstate) picked up an OD indicator light in the speedo, so the neutral switch had two wires, not one.
Can't speak for other years/models.
