carb problem?

#1

Post by wep0520 »

I bought my 76 gl1000 a year ago, installed an electric fuel pump to get it on the road and have had no problems. A month ago i got caught in a down pour that lasted for about 10 miles and light rain for another ten miles. A week later and she wont stay running on her own, have to keep revving or use choke to keep idle around 3000. Previous owner built and installed a 2 barrel manifold with a progressive 2 barrel out of an 80 something Nissan pickup(he had no idea what engine it was from). Prior to him a pointless conversion kit had been installed. Plugs are clean, reddish brown with the left bank being darker. Took the carb apart and all jets are clean, trimmed the plug wires back about half an inch but did nothing to running problem. The bike has no problems getting down the road, its the stopping that sucks. I advanced the timing and that made no change other than allot more power. Valve seals need replaced so it blows smoke when it has sat a couple days, sometimes bad other times a little puff. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you look the coils over carefully? Are they stock coils? Maybe even got some water in the fuel? That's not too likely but you never know.

You say that you pull the choke out and it will run at ~3k but wont idle!!! IMO you have an air leak like a cracked vacum line or gasket that has failed (loose maybe)..

I would get it running and spray copious amounts of CRC or WD40 around all the gaskets on the intake system to isolate where/if a gasket has failed....

To double check, get it running with the aircleaner removed and "choke" with your hand.... If it revs up and you can manipulate the revs with adjusting your hand/air ratio the its "sucking air"..

I go along with these guys. Idle jets or circuit. Almost every time it will idle with the choke partially on but not idle without the choke it points to idle circuit.

I would look closely for air leaks. You said it has a homemade intake. Check the welds over. A lot of people use carb spray to find the air leaks. Others use an unlit propane bottle waving it slowly around to find a sudden bump in rpm. There is a big group of single carb fans at classicgoldwings.com. I think most who start with it have leaks at first. After that, there are lots of ways to go. If yours is from a Nissan, I am guessing it's a 32/36 weber or clone.

Does it have a 2 into 1 Adapter on it? Check out HOTT's build here. He has one on his 1100. Most of the guys at classic also believe in this. His is titled, " Shade tree single solution by HOTT."
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Ok thank you for your help. I tore the carb down again and blew air through it it idle now but weird. Sometimes high sometime normal but livable/ ride able. I dont know what to doo with the spare parts i wound up with lol. I found a check ball on the bench after i put it together but i think its part of the accelerator pump.

This may sound odd. I just fixed another bike with a "similar" issue. It would stall just turning a corner if you didn't keep the revs up. It ended up being the ballast resistor. I found it in the shop. Would not do it until it was well warm. Like after 10 miles or so. At idle in the shop it would just start to act like it was dropping a cylinder. I pushed on the start button and it picked right up. Let go of the button and it acted up again. I put in a new ballast resistor and that took care of it. Not sure what ignition you have but it's easy to check. This one had Dyna ignition with 1500 coils.

That does sound familiar. Runs great at start up. I know the ballast gets super hot. Burned myself trying to adjust carb, seems like problem is in right bank. Lots of exhaust on left but not so much on right. Morning smoke. Before both were blowing smoke in morning. Ignition was already installed and it looks like a dyna but with stock coils.
