New clutch plates: Clutch cable needed a lot of adjustment

#1

Post by Sidecar Bob »

I just took Mr.H for a quick test drive up & down our road and the new clutch feels really good. We'll have to see how the NHC plates last http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 75&start=0

My concern is that I had to adjust the cable a lot to get the lever to pull the clutch. In fact, the cable was so loose that I took the cover back off to see if I had the Lifter Rod in wrong.

It has a GL1100 clutch cover & cable & lever on a GL1000 engine. With the old clutch plates I had the adjuster at the engine a bit past half way down. With the new plates I have the adjuster at the engine set all the way up. (The adjuster on the handlebar is still about 3 turns out).

Is this normal? I thought it would go the other way....

Yeah, but the cable is only a couple of years old and it would have had to stretch during the 2 or 3 weeks when it was apart and there was no tension on the cable...

I'm pretty sure the difference is caused by the new plates but I'm not sure it is normal.

Did you adjust the preload bolt in the center? I know you probably did but wanted to ask to be sure. Any time you add new plates that adjustment should be done.

I don't think it has one. I have a GL1100 clutch cover & lifter assembly (on a GL1000 engine - it has been like that since '97).... AFAIK, the only adjustments are at the ends of the cable.

Depends on the year. 80 and 81 I think do have one. 82 and 83 do not.
