New take on the main fuse mod

#1

Post by Sidecar Bob »

I think I was one of the first to replace the "dogbone" main fuse with a glass cartridge fuse in an inline holder over 25 years ago. Of course, I eventually converted to a blade fuse in an inline holder like we have been recommending for the last 10 years or more.

It was only a matter of time until something even better than that came along, and here it is:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/111665134749
For under $6 Cdn it really isn't worth bothering to put ring lugs on an inline fuse holder and do up the screws, is it? :dunno:
Image
I just installed one on Mr.H and there are 3 minor issues:
1) The fuses that came in mine are only 15A (I just pulled the 30 from the old inline holder and used it)
2) The opening for the 4 wire plug is not keyed. I used a razor saw to cut the key off of the plug and it slid in and feels secure.
3) The Motor & Battery terminals are reversed. They are marked correctly and the cables reach easily so this should not be a problem if you pay attention to the B and M cast into it.

Beware of the cheap starter solenoids!!

I bought one from ebay for $7. After a month, one day the solenoid stuck and would not disconnect the power to the starter. By the time I disconnected the battery, the new starter burnt out taking my new AGM battery with it. The solenoid turned out to be very expensive. I have since replaced the solenoid with a Honda part from a 1987 CBR600. Gives the same benefit with a blade fuse but isn't a crap Chinese part. I'm just saying.... be careful of what you buy.

People on the CX forum have been using these for a while and I haven't heard of any problems.

They have been around for a while and I have heard mixed reviews. I have one and its been sitting on the shelf waiting for the OEM solenoid to fail.

After reading this I ordered a couple. When I was putting Mr.H together on Friday I accidentally pushed on one of the inline fuse holder's wires and broke the lug so I installed one of the new ones. We'll see how well it lasts.

I have a fair bit of inexpensive Chinese electrical stuff on my bikes and in my home and I haven't had any real problems with any of it so far...

Well, don't say folks didn't try and warn you. I hope you have better luck than me. They really are not up to the standards of the OEM stuff. Here's my own personal experience with regard to my 1200. I will never use another one.

You were lucky. My starter got fried. I replaced the cheap Chinese knockoff with a Honda CBR600 sold oid. Same upgrade to a blade fuse with OEM reliability. I may be the "one guy in a million" who had the failure, but in the long run, this could be a very expensive part.

I had two of these fail, quickly too. Replaced with an OEM and blade fuse holder.

I used one on my cb900 and it is till working after 10 months but I agree that it is risky. On the DOHC forums they have been using a CB600 solenoid, similar to the one in the pic but OEM quality. On my latest barn find, an 83 CB1000C, I wired in a $4 Autozone blade. I crimped on two eyelets and used the screws that used to hold the dog bone. Used my diagonal cutters to make two notches so the little cover would close and lock the power connector. Looks good and clean and does away with the dog bone. But in my case the solenoid was still good.

What you describe is exactly the way I modded the old solenoids on both of my bikes, except that I potted the part under the fuse cover in silicone on the one on Eccles. I've had the wire corrode inside a ring lug on Eccles and a ring lug break off when I pushed the wire (gently) on Mr.H within the last year, either of which could have left me stranded...

No bob that is the cheap one that we're saying to avoid or buy at your own risk.
We are talking about the Honda OEM cb600
