75 GL Clutch

#1

Post by rrgrassi »

Hi!

I have a what seems to be minor problem. When I start up my Wing when the engine is cold (overnight), I let is warm up for about a minute. When I pull the clutch and drop into 1st, she starts pulling. After riding for a few miles, she's just fine. I was wondering if I needed to do an adjustment on the clutch or linkage.

Oil and filter are new, and using straight weight 30.

Thanks for the help! NGW is THE forum to belong to!

Most manufacturers recommend a 10W40 for 4-cycle, liquid-cooled motorcycles,
but you can try to adjust your cable a bit and test it.

Is it a motorcycle oil??????

You have wet clutches, & need to used motorcycle oil, as it will properly lubricate you cluthcges.

I have seen this problem before... it can be caused by a couple of things:

1) dirty oil. You said you changed the oil but was it a long time between changes? If so you may wish to change it again.

2) clutch out of adjustment. When the unit is cold the oil is thicker, especially with the viscosity you're using. The adjustment may not be disengaging the disks enough to overcome the friction. As the oil heats and thins it works fine. The solution for this may be as simple as changing the oil to a 10W40 grade as others have recommended. If the problem still persists adjust your clutch.

3) the clutch disks have become magnetized. Personally I haven't seen this but read about in a couple of bike manuals. The only fix they give for this is to replace the clutch.

Hope this helps

Wow, thanks guys! I was wondering if it was the oil viscosity. I'll try the 10w-40 first.

I tell people I know to buy and old Wing and join NGW!

Well, how did the oil change thing work out? I'm having the same problem, and I used 10W30 car oil; I didn't realize motorcycle oil was any different at all, other than price. I'm thinking I might try changing the oil and see how that works...

I ride just about 12 months out of the years and I use Bardhal 20W50. That oil is design for heavy motorcycle, the clutch work perfectly and the engine wear is at is mimimal.

I have not gotten to change the oil yet. Actually I have not ridden since I posted the initial problem. I hyperextended my right knee. It is about heald up, but it is still a bit tender.

I tipped my wing in the yard when I was moving from the driveway to the covered porch. No damage to the Wing, but the rider was a different story. So hopefully I can change the oil next weekend. This weekend is my rider safety class so I can get my license with out taking the driving test at the DMV.

I'll let you know how it works for me.
