1200 rear wheel on gl1000
So... I am about to attempt this swap, I have an extra 1200 rear wheel and hub and my brain was twirling around today... Can i put this on my 76 gl1000 with the 1200 engine? Why not try?
Got my 1000 wheel laid it beside the 1200, took the hubs up, same bolt pattern, they slide in
put the 1000 hub in my 1200 wheel, slap it on the 1000 final drive. oh no it sticks out .5 .75 inches (very rough measurment here, tomorrow im going through with it so more info on that)
looking at the 2 hubs again, the 1200 studs are actually 1/4 inch shorter then the 1000 studs, So I am swapping those, I'm also going to trim my 1200 studs down a little bit... to get the wheel centered again
Has this been done? Any input is always nice, although by the end of tomorrow... I might have a better idea of if it works

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
It's the thickness of the rim at the hub the same? If not, the wheel will be offset to the left. I'd also look at the width of the tire, as tire rub on the swing arm is the most common fitment issue when up sizing tires or swapping rims. I'm not saying that these issues can't be cured, but they're something to look out for and plan for.

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
I don't think it's been done, but that doesn't mean it can't. If you put a 15" wheel on a 1000 with a 1200 engine, you will have a screamer, high rpm, dragster.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
If you just put the hub on yes it would be offset to the left, But i am going to swap the hub bolts, (1200's are 1/4inch shorter) and shorten them a little on on the lathe, to recenter the wheel
as for the other side .. the rotor.. it looks like roughly a 1/4 out farther then the 1000 rim, so will bring that down to put the rotor back in the right spot
If i win or lose this will be alright it will be still be fun to see, and if it works, one of a kind I guess, i have no need for a secondary 1200 rim.... I think
Yes a screamer for sure, luckily I'll have my stock rim on hand,
I'll have to do more research on tire sizes
what is the fattest tire someones put on an 1000? with some swing arm persuasion ?
There's been a lot of wheel swapping happen, my dads working on his cx500 , the mini wing? but he put the 83 1100 rims on it, so it is now part gold wing

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
Pics would be nice. Having the wheel off the centerline of the bike won't affect handling much as long as the wheels are parallel. If this is doable, this might be a great mod for stock 1000's giving them a fatter rear tire and lower gearing. If you can make it fit by moving it left, you will get by with more tire room. With a 16" Lester rim, people have fit 140/90/16 and 150/80/16 with swingarm massage, but a 15" would move the contact point back towards the final drive, where it begins to enlarge rapidly. I think it will be trouble. But if you can get it in there slightly left and get the brake in there it might work. There is quite a bit of space on the left swingarm side.
Before proceeding any more, I think you should investigate the brake caliper fitting into the 1200 rim. On 1000's with a 16" Lester you have to remove the rotor nuts and tilt it and swear profusely at the caliper to get it in. You can also remove the bleeder to ease install and cut down on swearing a little. As tight as it fits with a 16", I'll be surprised if it fits with a 15".
As to tire size I referred to, those are using a Lester rim which is 3" wide. I think the 1200 is 3" wide as well. Going any wider goes against manufacturers' suggestions and puts you at risk of it coming off the rim.

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
Here some pics of the hubs and wheels compared to each other
as you can see the studs on the 1200 hub are a fair bit shorter, I've since removed the 1200 studs and will shorten them 1/4 inch , saving my 1000 studs if this all goes wrong

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
Here is some pics of it the stock 1000 hub sitting in the 1200 wheel the 1000 final drive on it little bit of a gap
anyhow.. I'm off to these studs machined down a bit, then I'll see where I am at
EDIT : Here is the 1000 drive on the 1200 wheel, its a hair too big on the 1200, so it's not sinking on like it should

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
Once you get the wheel to line up, I wonder if you will have any trouble with that wheel/tire combo fitting in the swing arm? I agree with Eric, if you get it all to work, it is going to scream.

I think you should stick it into the swing arm and see where the side clearance is.

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
I wish i had a smaller tire , even crappy tire to pop on it, I have high hopes of a 130/90/15 fitting with swing arm persuasion, if anyone has modded there swing arm, I'd love to see a pic
As for the rim..., in my brainstorm last night i forgot to test one fitting,
the 1000 final drive onto the 1200 wheel
and boom.... the 1200 'bearing hub wall' (not sure what youd call it ) is just a little bit bigger, I just need to shave a bit off it on the lathe and the final drive will slip over it no problems
(My friend does the machining, he previously modified a gl1100 wheel, by machining where the bearing sits in .3 inches, letting the gl1100 rear rim to be fitted onto cx500, also had to machining a places down on the axle)
I've attached a picture of the 1200 where i need to machine the outer wall on the bearing support down , its hard to see on the picture and the grease, but there is a slight tapered edge on it, and thats all you need to take off to make it fit
I've also put pictures of a closer comparison of the stud lengths, and the tapered end on them, Ive delayed shortening of the studs, because i overlooked the drive fitting on
shorterning them a 1/4 would be unproductive, but i might get away with , take the taper edge off them where they seat into the rim, and shortening the stud about 1/8 give or take
I'll have to see where its sitting with the gl1200 studs swapped into the 1000 hub, and the 1200 wheel machined down a hair to accept the final drive, that i will know later on this afternoon

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
All this being sad, is it really that bad to run a rear tire not perfectly centered? with the front? I know there are some harley models out there with a rear tire not centered
How much effect does this do to handling? This could be an escape from the trouble tire area, I believe I have enough material on the rotor side of the 1200 to take it down, i'd have check all that out
I also have the long studs of the 1000 hub and the short studs of teh 1200, and I can get the 1000's if need be to be a bit longer than the 1200's too
I'd really like some good input on the off center rear tire,

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
With a little bit take off the 1200 wheel, the 1000 final drive now slips over it just fine
On side note, watching the bearing housing on the wheel being trued on the lathe... it is wild how much wobble the outer rim has ....
the 1000 hub has had the shorter 1200 studs installed and this is how it sits on the bike currently
I need a better way to measure it but from the center of a spoked 1000 rim to the edge of the final drive, compared to the center of the 1200 rim, the 1200 rim is offset about .4-.45 inches to the left, while the caliper needs to come in about .5-.6 inches, a lot more material to play with on that side though
So i have some options in my head im going through I'll post em when i go grab some pics and take it all apart
There's also a big gap between the final drive and the rim, to keep dirt out, this is mainly because of the different dimensions where the teeth are on the hubs compared to the studs,

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
How about seeing if the 1200 swingarm will fit. That may solve a few problems, and maybe create others......

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
I'd much rather modify this wheel than do that... .. I think I can find some 130/90/15... maybe ill get a shinko to test it, cause i doubt ill find an old use one...LuckyEddie wrote:How about seeing if the 1200 swingarm will fit. That may solve a few problems, and maybe create others......
put some pics on of my 77 gl1000 with 130's on it, i think it would clear swing arm fine, maybe a slight mod, 140.... definitely..not sure you could
and pics for comparison of where the stock wheel is sitting, I'm pretty sure i can get it centered with some tinkering tomorrow

Re: 1200 rear wheel on gl1000
Fitting better today, its moved over a 1/4 inch to the right, Now i need to sit back and decided if I want to completely center it or not
its roughly out .2 inches to the left
the caliper needs about a 1/4 inch more room to fit on
Here are some pics of how its sitting
