Changing gl1000 coils to GL 1100 83' coils

#1

Post by RB »

I get you slice the blast wires together to take the blast out of the circuit..but the plugs on the 1100 coils and 1000 don't match up..working with what is on hand...so cut the old connectors off the 1000's then cut the 1100 plug off and splice the connectors 1000 on the 1100 wires..matching up the wire colors???

trying to help a guy out and I don't have either set of coils in front of me.. anyone have a diagram of what goes to what color wise..etc.

Are wire colors the same on the 1000 and 1100 coils..

ignore the wire colors for a bit.... the correlation you need to preserve is that the wires going to the gl1000 Coil, which fires cylinder 1-3 still go to the gl1100 coil firing the same set of cylinders. same thing for 2-4.

Correct there is no "polarity" on those wires. Two of the wires are actually the same wire. That is the 12v wire to the primary of both coils. The other wire is the "trigger" wire and you have to keep that one on the same set of plug wires as the original.

Not all 1100 Coils use a ballast, 1980-81 did, 1982-3 didn't .....

Just to confuse things a bit ......

good catch Robin.

As for ballast or not doesn't matter when it comes to wiring the coils. Just wire it up like the old ones were. Pop the old out and put the new in.

Might be wrong but I thought the ballast was only needed while running points.

I just looked and the 82-83 had the ballast resister. Some have speculated it may be that Honda decided to play it safer after early model failures. I'm thinking of reading the pg's were different as well.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

If you buy a Dyna ignition it comes with a ballast to use with stock coils on a GL1000. So no, they are not needed just for points. ;)
