GL1100 1982 callipers on GL1000 1978

#1

Post by TheWheel »

I've obtained a set of callipers from a 1982 GL1100 and fitted them to my 1978 GL1000.

I'm concerned that the pads don't contact with enough of the brake disc. See attached pictures.

I wonder if one of the resident experts could say if I'm right to be concerned or if this is simply a feature of changing to these callipers.

Many Thanks

Phil

It's kind of hard to tell from your pics, but the full surface area of the pad needs to contact the disc. There should be no part of the pad hanging over the outside edge or rubbing on the inside rim of the disc. If they aren't, you're golden!

No there's 1/4" to 3/8" not connecting. Looks like I might have the right callipers but wrong brackets. I'm posting another pic that might show the issue a bit better.

I guess that I'm going to have to read back to find part number for right brackets and see if I can get hold of some.

Thanks for your help.

I've definitely got the wrong brackets. I've inset my one with John (Old Fogey) 's one on the attached image.

The problem I have now is finding the right ones. I thought I'd struck lucky getting a complete front set with callipers and brackets now I've given myself another headache.

If anyone can help me to identify the correct brackets I would be very grateful.

I've done a bit more research and there is an issue with the commonly held view that callipers from the 1982 GL1100 are direct bolt on replacements for the 1978 GL1000. The ones I have are definitely from a 1982 GL1100 as shown on this page at Partzilla. http://bit.ly/1XsoIVt

Just pointing this out for anyone else who is considering this upgrade. I think that the correct brackets are on many of the over 500cc Honda bikes from between 1982 and 1985. For example the brackets from the 1985 Honda CB 700 SC NIGHTHAWK look right. Once I find out for sure I'll report back as it might help someone in the future.

Cheers

Phil
