Starter maintenance

#1

Post by Airshow »

As part of the refreshing of my 1979 GL1000 after sitting for 20+ years I am removing the exhaust system for inspection and replacement or gaskets.

While I have the exhaust off should I do anything with the starter? It works fine with no problems, but I thought while I can easily get to it...

Thanks
It's all good.

You can clean out the carbon deposits. They can cause wear and tear. Use caution to not let the inner Nut behind the starter wire lug to spin even a little when removing the power wire as that generally ruins them. A shaved down (thin) 10mm open end wrench is very useful

I recently rebuilt the starter on my wife's shadow and the amount of carbon inside it was astounding..

Usually I would say "Don't fix it until it's broke" but in this case, since it's all apart, go for it. Just make sure you can hold that bottom nut absolutely still while removing the power wire. If you can't then .... Don't fix it 'til it's broke..
