Possible coolant leak from new Honda water pump (on a 77 gl1000)

#1

Post by elslimdiablo »

Anyone ever have a new Honda pump fail? I've got less than 600 miles on my engine since I rebuilt it. Replaced the original 1977 pump with a new Honda unit. I have been riding it without coolant loss , parked it on Thurday afternoon, and when I returned tonight (5 days later) there is a drop on my lift and it came from the weep hole. Is there another possibility that would cause this leak. The only sign of a leak on the bottom of the engine is from the weep hole. AUGGĢGGGG!

First things first- MAKE SURE it's coming from the weep hole. I have symptoms very similar to what you're experiencing, but when I got to looking, I'm fairly certain it's coming all the way from my upper radiator hose. The weep hole on these things is pretty much were any leaks from the front end end up anyway, so it pays to check everything.

Not saying you may not have an internal problem anyway. It just pays to eliminate the cheap stuff first.

The only place that showed any moisture was the weep hole. I cleaned it and am going to ride it to work today to see what happens. It was just a drop and work is just ten miles away, so I feel safe enought to ride it. I'll throw my black light on it tonight and see if it is coming from someplace else.

For peace of mind snug up all of the hose clamps that you disturbed when you did the pump change. Many times after a pump or hose change they seem to loosen up a bit after some use. Easy enough to go over them.
Hope for that and not a pinched 0-ring when you put the pump in.

Rode to work........and..... nothing. On better news , I finally fixed the pesky vacuum leak that has had me fooling with the bike everytime I get off it. The sync screw washers (on the intake manifolds) were deformed on allowing a leak on 2 and 4. I'll pressure test the system after I get it back home and cooled off tonight.

Several here have reported very small weep hole leaks for a period of time with new pumps. Sometimes the carbon/ceramic seal surfaces need to seat. and it is not that unusual. Mine would occasionally do the same for the better part of the first season but all has turned out well for over 5 years now.

I have 4 old wings, all with new Honda pumps (2 to 5 years old) and they all leak a drop or two if they sit a lot or when the weather changes.

I've never had a new pump leak at all. But yes, especially when they set over the winter they will sometimes leak a bit at first.

The company I bought the water pump from is going to warranty it, so I'm going to replace it. I just dont want to question it when I'm in the mountains a month from now.

No, it is a new Honda pump. When I rebuilt the engine back in March, most of the parts used were N.O.S. including the head gaskets.
