Engine miss at highway speeds........FIXED!
Hello all,
Still having a problem with my 77 GL. I can run back roads all day log without a miss. When I cruise out on the open highway (and after it gets good and warm) the engine develops a miss that causes it to loose power.
Here is what I have done so far.
Randackk carb rebuild. ( Ive had them off twice to recheck for blocked passages and other issues without finding anything)
Repaired a few vacuum leaks.
GL1500 coils, new wires, new plugs, caps, and points. Split timing on both 1-2, 3-4.
Rebuilt the petcock, Randakk fuel filter, and new fuel lines.
Voltage dropped the entire ignition system, found a bad ignition switch and replaced it.
Coils ohm out at 23K cold, 26K hot.
Plugs look light brown and all look the same.
All carbs are synced ( and have been checked several times. Did every adjustment and alteration I found on Randakks Blog.
When the bike is acting up, I have tried switching to reserve ( no change) and slowly pulling out on the choke ( only a slight change). I have pulled the sending unit and looked at the pickup tubes. The tank is clean.
Compression is around 165 on all cylinders. I had the engine apart about 600 miles ago for head gaskets and rings.
What am I missing, maybe a fuel pump? Its not leaking out of the weep hole.......Help!

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
Engine develops a miss? Drops one or more cylinders or the thing just pretty much stops running any faster? Most of what you've tried seems to point toward a fuel delivery problem. Try loosening the fuel cap just to make sure it's vent is working.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
Whisker may have hit the nail on the head. A frozen advancer is hard to diagnose just riding it. But to someone with a lot of experience it will make the engine feel sluggish at anything above idle, but usually not accompanied by a miss.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
Advance works and still has the rubber bumpers. Tried the gas cap on the way home from work with no change. It feels like a miss and it sounds like it out the exhaust at slower speeds. This only happens when I get the bike moving at highway speed (rpm from 3500 on up. ) If I am winding around back roads I have full rpm range without a problem. I'm kind of leaning towards a fuel starvation issue at steady middle rpm range, but what throws me off is that once it starts doing it it will continue to do it at lower rpms until I shut it down.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
If you have the original ignition parts: coils, plug wires, resistor I wouldn't look too much further than that before I upgraded the ignition components. Resistor could be breaking down under heat, same with a coil and 30+ year old plug wires have to be a failure point by now.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
Yes check fuel pressure and flow rate. Also recheck those coils resistance. 26k hot sounds like it's right on the edge of failing to me. Without resistor caps usually the secondary (high voltage) side will read 11k or so. Add the two 5k resistor caps and that takes it to 21k. Not sure of the specs on your GL1000 but that is what I generally find on Honda motorcycle coils.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
If the 1000 is like the 1200 was, it actually runs hotter at continuous highway speed than normal. Heat breakdown of the coils is pretty common on a 40 year old anything...

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
The secondary side of the ignition is all new, with the exception of the used gl 1500 coils and the condenser. My measurement of 26k was the entire circuit including the caps. Not running a ballast as the coils are 12v. Voltage drop tested the primary side which found the failing ignition switch. Replaced that with a new one. I'll look into the fuel pump tests this weekend.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
is 26k the normal reading for 1500 coils and caps? If both are the same or close that's probably normal. It's just that 21k to 23k is the norm on most of the Honda coils I've seen. From what I remember 25k was considered the max usable.

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
Gl1000 coils, wires, caps, were recommended to be 24-27k. Should be okay.
Being that you're in search mode, was the brass all Keihin? Aftermarket needles were poor. They usually have no markings and were slightly longer than stock-- probably for hopefully improved economy?? Another item is the springs for the slides. Are they all the same length. There are a couple varieties of spring length too. Some shorter, some longer.
Did you get the air jets in the correct holes, bigger air jets to the outside?? One of those mixed up would be enough to cause your issue.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

The way you describe this it does not come on immediately and stays until you stop or until you shut down for a bit??
Maybe I missed but dyna or points??
If you have to shut it down for it to get better how long does it need to rest??
If dyna then that is suspect if points then I am still thinking fuel starvation

Re: Engine miss at highway speeds
Running new points. When I rebuilt the carbs, I used Randakks video and kit. Verified all the brass as factory. The springs are the same length and I dressed all the slides and bores as instructed by Randal. I have had them out twice since then to reverify clear passages and float settings. I've never found anything, although I did induce two vacuum leaks with pinched O rings. ( repaired with new rings) This is why I am starting to suspect fuel pump volume. When I am on and off the throttle, say in twisties, my engine rpm fluctuates, and so would my fuel demand. I'm wondering at a constant rpm above 4000 for extended time leans me out due to limited fuel delivery due to worn pump internals. I have never opened it up, but there must be check valve of sorts to prevent fuel from being sucked back into the pump from the carb side when it is on suction stroke. I'm taking a break from it at the moment as the house is getting renivated and I have a bike trip to N.Y. next weekend. I was hoping to take the wing but I will push my shadow back into service as it is drop dead reliable. I'll figure this thing out, I just cant rush it or Karma will come a knocking.
