Well, on researching to find the origin of the word and meaning, it seems to go right back to middle ages and be a shortened version of cottarel or cotterell which meant a pin, wedge, or other device to prevent the relative movement of two parts; something that a split pin is incapable of doing. The cotter pin as used in UK seems to have originated right back in the early days of steam, as far as I can tell, when they needed something substantial to hold things like the connecting rods to the cranks. But it may go back further than that to the round taper wood pins used to hold many wooden parts together, as found in wooden beam buildings.

A pair of slip joint pliers helps to push the pennies in. Spiral around to keep it fairly straight.
