85 GL1200 oil weep

#1

Post by ajpags »

Hey there...
My 85 GL1200 has developed an oil weep problem, but from where I would expect coolant - meaning that little hole under the water pump. Is that a common sign of water pump failure or am I missing something?

I just replaced that nightmare of a gasket on the front of the motor, and now this problem has developed. Has anyone had success eliminating this gasket entirely, and just using a high temp RTV instead? I don't trust the gasket at all, and am thinking that it's allowing oil to seep into that area...

Any help is appreciated - my old girl has 107,000 miles on it, and is begging for more.

If you have oil coming out the small hole under the water pump it's because you MUST replace the water pump now before the oil get into the coolant, hopefully it's not to late because a full flush is a long process. The way those pump goes either they leak coolant or oil but both way is because the seal are gone and the pump must be replace, (it is still better oil in coolant than coolant in oil).

That's what I figured - but really, if it's leaking oil, wouldn't it just be the O-rings behind the waterpump?

I guess if I have to pull it apart, another 100 bucks on a waterpump isn't going to kill me huh?

Buy a new sealing kit from JC.

welcome ajpags to the ngw................

i would agree with wing84 here.i would suggest replacing the pump itself...

it may well be the seal, but with that mileage would have thought the impeller shaft would be worn...........

let us know your progress my friend+safe riding...................

If the tell tale hole has oil comming out of it, one of the seals on the water pump brearing is probablly gone. With care the pump can be taken apart and the bearings replaced. These bearing can be obtained from a good bearing supplier.

Not worth monkeying with in my mind - just going to drop a new pump in the thing. Damn, I hate to take it all apart again, but maybe I'm a pro by now!

Worst part of it all really is draining the fluids!!!

Thanks for the replies!

It is a bit of a fiddle fitting new bearings, but in the UK a new water pump is over £90. New bearings are under £20 and me being a bit tight have always rebuit mine.

Warning: If you drive with really bad bearings in
your water pump the drive shaft on it can break. I have seen that
happen with a GL1000, and a small piece of the drive shaft come into
the engine, and damage the crankshaft! There was a big rift on it...

Frustration!

I went to all the trouble to change the water pump out to a new one because
it was leaking coolant and oil. Took it for the first shakedown ride today
(just a short 10 k jaunt) and park the bike; it is leaking oil and coolant
again (looks like mostly oil) from the weep hole.

Which gasket did I put in wrong? :-) Or could my brand new Honda waterpump be faulty?

I should have gotten a full water pump gasket set, but the local dealer
parts dept. seemed unaware of the existence of such a beast. They ended up
ordering me things piecemeal from their microfiche, and I ended up re-using
a few O-rings (all the ones on the waterpump itself were new, as were the gaskets). The ones that I am now questioning are the two that are about
the size of quarters, that go right in the two passages at the top of the cover(the actual
gasket around the front engine cover also goes around these two surfaces).

Wannabe, I understand you already replaced your waterpump.

If you just need the O-rings go to Harbour Freight, they have standard and metric O-ring assortments.......I walked out with both(600+ orings) for $18. If you want to buy the whole sealing kit........
Partsnmore has it for $22(quality made in Japan OEM supplier) but you have to order $35 in merchandise for US.

For those who have yet to do a waterpump. Get the sealing kit AND get a waterpump seal set from Honda for the CX500 (pn--19217-657-023) I bought my OEM seal on ebay from an "old stock dealer sale" I only paid $14,
Again.........no I don't work there, Partsnmore has the seals for $22. You'll also want to replace the bearings(around $12 @ your local supplier)
All this is still cheaper than $100 for a waterpump.

Banzai !!!!!!!!!!
