Rednaxs60 wrote:Had a new core put in the rad for my '85 LTD - $364.00 taxes in. One of the reasons for the cost is the rad on a 1200 is smaller than the 1000/1100 and is supposed to be a high efficiency, just capable of keeping the bike cool at cruising speeds. I also live on an island and it had to be brought over from Vancouver, BC. Nothing inexpensive about living on Vancouver Island.

The older gent who did the core replacement flow tested the rad when I took it in and he estimated about 30% flow reduction, and then recommended a new core. He was also familiar with the GW rads and had the core catalogue open to the page for GW rads because he had just done one the week before.

Here is the old one:Old Rad Core 1.jpgOld Rad Core 2.jpgThese pictures are of the top and bottom passages. Considerable build up of scale over 32 years. When I viewed the passages with a light, there was considerable reduction inside the tubes and some were blocked.

Huh?

Your radiator is smaller so it costs more?

He has a catalog of GW radiators, any idea what catalog that would be?

Sounds like this guy knew you had few options and took advantage of that fact.

There are few options left on the island - he is the only game in town and on the island as I'm told. He's an older gentleman also battling cancer. Once he retires there is no one else in the wings to do this work so it will cease to be an option on the island.

Well packed for the trip across the pond.

The only issue I see..and it isn't much of an issue.

Image

It's going to take some tweaking to get the tins on..and the top and bottom mounting locations don't have studs like the sides, bolts and nuts will be required.

Image

The bolt holes line up..might take a bit of massaging on one.

Image

This is the possible big problem..the fill neck is straight..not angled..

Ya, the straight neck might be a problem. I really love good welding on aluminum. I could stare at it for hours.

I am pleasantly surprised..extremely fast delivery, packed extremely well..
if none of the welds leak it will be money well spent.

my curiosity got the best of me..had to test fit it. the neck being straight doesn't interfere with it mounting..getting the rad cap off could be next to impossible. However the pipe for the over flow hose hits the bottom of the coil.

Image

this is as close as I could get it to the frame.

Image

Almost where it needs to be but not quite.
Image

The pipe is threaded in..so I see a couple of options.
1 is just cut it shorter so it clears the coil...however this might not leave enough to secure the hose tight enough.
2 Try and bend the pipe..without kinking it.
3 drill a new hole relocating the pipe around towards the air breather thus clearing the coil.
This presents another problem though. Where the pipe is now is thicker then the rest of the neck so the threaded part of the pipe doesn't protrude into the neck. I'm assuming this is to give it strength and clear the rad cap.

okay..after sitting here looking at the first picture..it looks like if I remove the coil from it's bracket..that might allow the rad to sit back against the frame far enough the over flow pipe will clear the coil..
