If you were buying a 1100 which one would you buy
I am getting an immaculate full tour version 82 tomorrow. It is almost museum quality. 50,000 miles.New everything. It is simply just too nice to make it naked. I know that is sacrilege on this site. My 1500s weighed about 850.I think this one will be about 700 dry weight and 750 wet weight.I am happy.

For me... 80/81. The gearing differences of the 82 and 83 making a lower RPM at highway speed sacrifice takeoff power, but in a full dress model, it probably won't matter much either way. You just can't go wrong with the 1100.

I like the better brakes on the '82 (not sure about the linked brakes in '83), as well as the wider tires (higher weight rating). The '82-'83 carbs also have the removable jets, which make them much easier to clean/rebuild. And of course '83 was the first year for the cast wheels, anti-dive forks, and improved rear shocks. Still, as brianinpa says, you just can't go wrong with any of them (and they are easy to get naked, and change back).

I owned an 82 and grafted the best parts of an 83 onto it.
Forks, wheels and engine.
I did spend more time in 4th gear, basically using 5th (true overdrive) at highway speeds only. Fuel mileage improved by doing that.
I believe that 82 was the first year of self canceling turn signals too.
Although mine was a Standard, I added a windshield and saddlebags.

I love my 81 Standard, but like most here I am admittedly biased. I've read that the 80-81 were the lightest and quickest of the 4-cylinder Wings. No way for me to prove that, but at about 650 pounds it's just about perfect for me. I added a removeable windshield, and over this winter am adapting a set of 81 Interstate saddlebags (custom brackets for the tops of the bags) for go-anywhere versatility. Still can have it back to OEM nakedness in about an hour if I want to.

I have had all manners of the 1100, and to me the 82 is the best.
Although, I did put 83 cast wheels on her.....
Progressive shocks and fork springs are good add's also.
My 82 (Oldewing) has over 120 K on her and still going. Been all over on it, and never walked home yet

Joking apart, love the 1100, especially the naked ones, had an 83 from new and loved it. My current 1980 has provided much entertainment on here but finally got it on the road in the last couple of years and well worth the time, effort and money, well to me anyway. The problem for me is that I remember my 83 through rose tinted glasses, and my 80 is up against my CB1300, 7years old and passed it's MOT today, and still turns heads and goes like hot snot!
Be interested to know how much you paid for a near museum example, bet it's not as much as my bike has cost!

If you go to any of the NGW rally's you will see very few naked goldwings. comfort on the 1100 interstate (windshield and fairing) is just that.
78 in the garage but I like my 83I Smoooooth!

If given the choice, I would go with the '83, but for VERY minor reasons. Tires, mostly. I just like the look of the chunkier tires and the alloy rims. From what I understand, the 1100 differences were pretty minor. I'm not aware of any huge motor changes, other than the re-gearing mentioned by others here. I tend to live under the idea that the Goldwings got better as the years went on.
I personally lucked out and managed to snag a 1200 Standard, so I'm good.

My '82 and I have been together for over 100,000 kilometers since 2008. She has been as steady and reliable throughout. Shes fully dressed and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I think the 1100, good as it was, was a stepping stone to the 1200. Many have moved on from the 1100 to a 1200. Myself included. I would go straight for the 1200. It is a vast improvement , engine wise
