Needing to replace the Stator...Update!

#1

Post by wingrider »

Hey all,

I fella I know recently brought me his 1200 standard to check stator output. It's determined that the stator is bad, which prompts my question.... Who makes the best replacement? He is only looking to change it once.

I see Randakk sells one... anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks for any help! anim-cheers1

Have heard good stuff about "Ricks" but I have not used them personally. I would stay away from Saber, Barracuda and DB electrics.

Or possibly Caltric as well. About this time last year I replaced a stator for a friends 1200 Aspy, he had already purchased the Caltric stator before saying anything to me so I went ahead and put it in and it worked just fine at first but that only lasted for maybe 6 months and it died again. My friend got fed up with the bike and sold it and now the new owner wants me to replace it again, problem is I really don't want to because I've already got enough projects keeping me busy. In the meantime though I've already forewarned about cheap price/quality stators

I started to type a rant, but I think I'll just say to stay away from Electrosport too.

Thanks for the warnings! Greg, I recalled you had trouble with one...the name is all I needed to know.

eBay seems to be full of the cheap ones. There are a couple OEM ones, but they are $400, as they are for the FI bikes.

4 + years 15,000 miles on a new OE and going strong. Paid around $250 for it then. Money seems well spent now. Do the starter clutch pins, springs, and good inspection also clean out debris around the scavenge oil pump too while in there.

Well, we are going to be putting in a Randakk stator in the 1200. Owner wasn't to keen on spending $350 for the OEM, and it appears it might be no longer available, so the Randakk one will hopefully work out!

I've been using an Electrosport for the past coupla years without problems. Charges at 14.1 volts consistently.

Strange that you lost the new stator. The original problem with the 1200 was the insulation they used and only in 84. I'd be surprised if that first bad stator was original OEM as Honda replaced thousands of stators back in the 80's. I'd be looking at the regulator/rectifier and the white connector mod on the next replacement stator. When the regulator goes it sometimes takes out the stator, but not always! You may think the stator is bad but until you do the resistance and VAC test you won't know for sure. I can't tell you how many times I've worked on a bike with a "bad stator" only to find the white connector or the R/R was bad and the stator turned out good.

I guess I'm saying before you pull the engine for Stator replacement, make absolutely sure it's not a simple wiring issue with white 3 pin connector.

Appreciate the concern, unplugging the stator (which we had cut the wires to be sure we had good connection) and checking the three leads with my meter set on the AC setting scale was set on 200, and it was reading 16-20 on all three lines. From what I have seen, the numbers should have been high 20's to low 30's at 1000 rpm, and 60-70+ at 3000 rpm. This one doesn't do that. It did ohm out ok, but that was about it.

I did plan to check the regulator/rectifier to be sure it was good before the new stator goes in. This bike was new to him last fall, and he bought it at a small dealer, so the history really isn't known on this one.

Well, finally had a bit of time to get the engine out of this 84, and take a look at the stator. I would say this one is about done. What do you all think?

Thats what my original looked like and the white plastic connector had melted and all three connectors were shorted together. I figured the short was the cause of the stator failure
