Amazing what you work out!

To begin with, I am more of a mechanic than a Sparky. I like to see something move physically and work out what that movement achieves.
Now my point.
I recently changed the neutral switch, the one that sits against the clutch lever. How hard can that be? After all, it's just a push fit. To make sure it went far enough in, I cut off some of the plastic surrounds as it appeared to tight.
Yesterday while fiddling with my bike I found out that with the bike in gear , clutch lever pulled, there was absolutely nothing when I pressed the start button. So I removed the two leads to the switch and joined them with a bit of copper wire and tried again. Bike started, so suspected the (new) switch. Took it out to check and it was fine.

So, had a little think and concluded the switch wasn't far enough in, but then thought I'd check how much movement is required to operate the clutch switch. I inserted a punch into the hole where the switch sits and operated the clutch lever. Instead of moving away from the lever, the punch went farther in! So then I concluded that when all is in place as it should be, the plunger on the clutch switch is pressed in, and when the lever is operated the plunger comes out. In other words, I have put the switch to far into the housing!!!! New one ordered!

Appreciate that's a lot of twaddle about a small item, but how many of you knew that!

They do say simple things.........
