removing front wheel

Attempting to take the front wheel off to replace the bearings and put a new tire on it.
Holy mother of God..whoever put the axle nut on must have used a power bar and 100 feet of pipe.
My 1/2" impact gun won't budge it... :shock:
Is it suppose to be that tight?
I'm assuming removing the caps won't work as the nut will have it jammed against the hub?

You do have to remove the caps. It will never turn with the caps tight. Remove the wheel from forks. Then use a breaker bar to loosen the axle nut.

Now when you put it back together put the wheel assembly back under the forks and loosely put the caps on. Then tighten the caps on one side, to hold that axle nut, and use your torque wrench on the free nut. Then tighten up all the caps. FYI to properly install those caps be sure and torque the front facing nut first then the rear nut on each side.

You can also use this method to remove the wheel. Just loosen the caps on the axle nut side, then the breaker bar to just loosen the axle nut. Then you can loosen the other side caps and pull the wheel out. I find it difficult to break that nut loose when the wheel is free to move around the shop.

Check the torque value for the axle nut too. Without looking I bet it isn't as much as you might think. ;)

got it off. I didn't realize the nut had a collar on it that was being held by the clamp. :oops:
bearings installed. I need to pick up a 3/8 torque wrench so I didn't put it back on the bike yet.

Generally you want to pick a torque wrench that has your most common working values in the middle of the scale on the torque wrench. For instance if you need 80 ft lbs for a rear axle nut you'd use a 1/2 drive wrench that goes from about 20 to 150 ft lbs. For case covers and most of the 8mm and 10 mm head (not thread size) bolts I use my 1/4 drive inch lb wrench which is about 20 to 150 inch lbs! So those case bolts usually around 100 inch lbs or 8 or 9 ft lbs. Same with clutch pressure plate bolts which are usually in that same range.

Bottom line you should have 3 torque wrenches. 1/2 in 3/8 and 1/4 and a conversion chart or app to get the correct metric to inch/ft lbs. I have two 3/8 drive wrenches. One reads ft lbs and the other scale reads newton meters. The other reads ft lbs and inch lbs. But I rarely look at the newton meter scale. I do the conversion, with an app or Google, use the ft lbs.

I don't buy much from Harbor Freight but I do use their torque wrenches which are frequently on sale. If you take care of them they should give you good service.

My 1/2" torque wrench is a snap on micrometer style. It was my wedding present to myself 27 years ago. :mrgreen:

If you have a Princess Auto in the Maritimes they have decent quality torque wrenches in the 3/8 inch drive ft lb medium scale range and a 1/4 " size for the inch pounds measurement. When they are on sale you are usually around $20-$25 each for them. They come in a blow moulded case to keep them safe and accuracy is in the 4-5% range typical for this style of torque wrench.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.

that is where I went to get the 3/8 wrench. On the way home I kicked myself for not getting the 1/4" drive one too..
going to pick one up my next trip to the city.
