plastic carb tops

Hello,

I read that old plastic can be refurbished by placing it in boiling water. Good or bad idea to put the entire carb top in boiling water?

Why not just take the tops off if in doubt?

WON'T hurt anything but why ..much smaller pot if you take the caps off...not sure that it will help the caps anyway...

How do you take the plastic caps off of the aluminum without damage. The caps are intact but I'm worried they are getting brittle and shrinking. Boiling old plastic is suppose to referburish them. That's all, just wondering if any had tried it.

Don't think you can. Pistol Pete or one of the Honchos here does a refurbish but I don't think it's a job for mere mortals. If they don't leak and you can tolerate their appearance, I'd call it good and leave them alone

I guess you could just "protect"/seal them some JB weld or some good paint..???? There are a couple of how to's about replacing the plastic with metal inserts..basically drilling out the cap's lip inserting a appropriately sized disk..I think nickles fit and gluing it in place. Do a search there are pics too.

I did one on my '77. Previous owner had silicone goober over the cracked original.
I used a washer on top of the carb cap, and a nickel on top of that. JB Weld to hold it all together.
I think the washer was just a 1/4" flat washer from a bulk bag. The nickel was from 1977....I had to go through 3, or 4 rolls of nickels before I found one. Just have to make sure the washer is centered for the slide to come all the way up, and don't plug any of the holes that are supposed to be there.
