Dyna makes good stuff. Nothing is perfect and things can fail but I have used several over the years with good results. Reputable company. You will need to check the resistance of the primiary side of the coils to be sure your around 3 ohm or you can damage a new unit. Also testing on a battery charger is suspected cause of some units from too high voltage. I have not had this happen.

I've had great luck sending them in, problem is the waiting time. If you still have the points you could go to that in the meantime.

For that style I think the magic smoke is in the black box.

There a few tops to check from the Dyna website. One is to check the gap between the rotor and the pickups--0.020" to 0.040" I think? The other recommendation I've gotten is to change the source of the 12 volts to the black box. Typically it's from the flasher.

I make no claims to the accuracy of this but some folks have noticed their Dyna craps out soon after finding they are charging a bit high. Another member here said their limit for over voltage is a bit on the low side. A failing regulator or corrosion buildup can cause Gls to overcharge. It would be prudent to check your charging system,

Wires, If wires aren't included with the coils, not sure if the old ones are long enough to use. New caps and resistors if yours are 39 years old.

IIRC, the stock wires are 7mm. When I did my 1100 with stock coils, I bought six feet of bulk wire, and had just enough to do the job. Replace the caps as well, because the resistors inside can crap out too.
Or, compare the price of all those individual parts, and check out the C5 ignition system. I've heard great things about it...

Get new plug caps as well if they are not included with the wires.

By plug wire caps, do you mean the caps that attach the wire to the spark plug? If the wire set you bought doesn't have new caps, you should buy replacements. The caps have a resistor in them and it is not uncommon for the resistor to fail. They are almost 40 years old, after all.
