I checked the "shop talk" forum and didn't see this topic covered.
I want to take another stab at syncing the carbs on my 76.
I have to check the points and timing yet but it dawned on me while I was planning my "attack" that I don't remember reading anywhere about doing this.
I set them as per Randakks dvd and it was running lean on a couple of cylinders. turned the pipes blue...
I've used a vacuum gauge to set the idle mixture on my camaro (holley 4 bbl).
How does one accomplish this on the gl1000?

Idle drop procedure is called for by the book for the late 78 and all 79 carbs but many of us use the same procedure on all 1000 carbs. I do it basically by the book but depending on the setup of the bike I will add an extra 1/2 or full turn out when complete https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic ... 09#p453009

Do you mean synchronization of the carbs?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

No eric. Setting the idle mixture on them. I "bench set" them as per Randakks video but the bike is running lean.

I think your only control on that is the idle drop method, unless you have a Gunson Color Tuner or wideband. Like Whiskerfish mentioned, get them close to best idle, back them out a half turn for a little more fuel to be safe....???

Idle mixture only affects the combustible mixture when at idle. If your plugs show the mixture is lean no adjustment of the idle mixture screw is going to help. Well unless you never open the throttle. Main jet size and metering needle affect mixture while above about 1/4 throttle.

Fuel level in the bowl play a little role here too? I haven't heard it said much here, but I thought I've read other sites where fuel level has a lot to do with mixture.

The idle mixture does affect a bit more than just closed throttle idle. Check this from Mikuni. Fig. 7 shows a little about throttle position operation. http://www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htm

Also, idle drop procedure is the best way to adjust the mixture screws.
