Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
They are easy to rebuild . But the ceramic seal is also a key to a good rebuild. And finding the parts can e a challenge

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
I would consider rebuilding but for all the trouble I would still have a bakelite impeller that is 38 years old. Nah
I will have a little extra money coming in soon and I have two other bikes to ride while I wait. Probably not a lot of good riding weather left in Central Kentucky anyway.
I would like to get the pump and gaskets together, Does anyone sell them as a set?
Thanks. Dave

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
I bought this bike to use for a three wheeler project but then my son saw it and started drooling over it as his first bike???
I am kinda glad it's not running right now. He needs some experience on a lighter bike first.

Pretty sure the pump is a Honda only item. Randakk sells all the o rings, gasket and washers you will need.leggman wrote: I would like to get the pump and gaskets together, Does anyone sell them as a set?

I would start spraying the bolts that hold the transmission cover on now with a good penetrating fluid. They can be a bear to get out.

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
Western Honda in Az, eBay they come up once in a while, gasket sets on ebay too $20-25. Also youi can rebuild the pumps for about $25 in parts..look in the how to forum..also one guy here from Denmark?? sells a kit to rebuild..bearings, seals etc. or take the old parts to a bearing house and get a match; the rebuild is not hard at all. Punch out the shaft, clean it up install new bearings and slap it back together..but if you have a bakelite impeller be careful they can break while you are beating on the shaft to remove it. Metal impellers no issues.

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
I do have the bakelite impeller so I was just wanting to replace but I want a oem pump not a chinese copy.
If I am going to spend that kind of money I want a good one.

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
Someone spent the time to design a special impeller at considerable cost so I have to wonder if the old bakelite version is a better and more effective design but too expensive to produce and fragile. I have the newer steel version and no issues even at 97 deg. Might we be better off to keep them as long as practical??

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
I have used both in my 78, and feel they both perform about the same. However I have to think the metal one is cheaper and easier to manufacture, which probably is why they changed

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
Screws,,, Why does it have to be screws...
I am in the process of taking the front cover off and I CANNOT get to the last two screws on the top left. (circled)
I even jacked it up and removed the front wheel so I could get a full swing with the hammer impact. There has got to be a better way. The water pump is due Tuesday so I was trying to get ahead a little.
Also when I DO get them out it probably won't be in my best interest to put them back in so I am looking for an alternative either allen head or torx head or anything but phillips/JIS.

Re: Cooling system issues 79 GL
I used a "wobble head" extension on my impact driver to get to those.
And yes..you most definitely want to use allen head bolts to replace them.
