Bizarre oil leak!!!

#1

Post by chewy999 »

Started the bike up the other day and all went well apart from a very small drip of oil on the floor. On inspection I found it came from the joint where the exhaust joins the downpipe! I fitted a new Motad system, 4 into 2, and the joint is secured with a single bolt. I probably should have applied a thin layer of exhaust cement to ensure an air tight seal, but I didn't! Anyway, if I had, I wouldn't see the problem I have now.

My question is how can oil get into the exhaust. Hoping it's not the head gasket, but recently did a compression test and got good high readings, at least 164 on number 4, the side effected.
My other thought was that it may be the a valve stem seal, but after that I'm a bit clueless, (know what your thinking  ).

Random question, if you had a bent valve, would you still get good readings on a compression test.

One week to go before our big day!

Condensation in the exhaust mixing with carbon buildup then dripping out making you think it's oil maybe? I would think if a valve stem seal was so bad it was letting oil into the exhaust the bike would then be smoking like crazy as well.

Left side it could be the trans shifter seal leaking. Then running down the exhaust. Like JSBail said, if it was a valve seal it would be smoking pretty bad. Does it smoke at all? The only way for oil to get "in" the exhaust system is for a very bad situation like major valve seal or rings. If that the bike would also smoke like a chimney. Look close for oil coming from some place else. Shifter seal, valve cover gasket, valve cover gasket bolt seal.

The 'oil' is definitely coming from inside the exhaust, the shifter seal is good. It smoked for a while but once that had burnt off, it was fine, so maybe it's not as bad as I thought. I'll take the exhaust off and reassemble using some exhaust 'stuff' to ensure a seal. I'll keep a strict note of the oil level as well for a while.
That said, also read Randakk's post about early wings smoking at start up. https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=64085. Maybe the 1100 also has the same issue.

Yep at least my 1100 does, it doesn't smoke every time but enough to annoy me.

That's like mine, not all the time, and probably wouldn't have brought this subject up if the exhaust pipes were sealed properly.

Sealing the joint is not a bad idea but it's just masking the symptom. All I can see happening is it will hold more oil in the exhaust and smoke a bit longer on start up. Neither of which is a bad thing.

As I said I'll keep an eye on the oil level for a while, if it is oil, but it only shows when I start the bike up, so the amount involved is negligible and stops smoking after a while.
