baking coils

#1

Post by phillip0123 »

On Randakk's site he mentions heating your coils at 200 degrees in the oven to see if they break down with heat, however there is no mention about how long. The reading cold was 11.4 each, what am I looking for, large difference between coils? Should there be overall higher or lower #'s ? These are 20 yr. old ACCEL coils on a GL1000.

I had a set of the Accel coils on my 74 CB750 for 30 years and had one go bad only a couple years ago. Went back to the stock. It was probably my fault that one failed. I left the key and kill switch on over night when Quitting for the night

New readings after 1 hr. 20 min. baking. R/coil 11.4 to 14.86, L/coil 11.5 to 14.9.
So what does this mean? Do I need new coils or something else. It will run just fine for a while and then one coil will start missing let it set for awhile and then it will run fine for awhile. Right now it is 3/4 earlier it was 1/2 but did a connecting 1/2 is fine now it is 3/4.

Are you using points or electronic ignition. Are you sure it is the spark that is failing.

Well yes, when it is missing you can pull the offending plug wires nothing changes. Dyna-s ignition when problem first started I swapped coils missing stayed with 1-2. Repaired poor connection on right coil. Put an old points plate on ran fine for 80 miles, started missing, came home found a bad wire for the left set of points replaced wire then the left coil or 3-4 cylinders
started missing, went back to dyna ran fine went for a ride within 5 miles 3-4 started missing then it would surge in and out. Clean tank new lines new pump clean carburetor. I am at a total loss of a solution. I did try to blow it up got it in the garage turned to about 10.5 by the tach, this was on 2 cylinders it wouldn't die.

Problem solved. When I was fiddlein with the bare points wire I must have blown the condenser or at least one side of it. Took a known good one off the hoopy and put on the bike and all is good. I now have 141 test miles on it without a hiccup. I think the fix is in. Time for my cigar!!
What was really strange was the left points were dead but the right side firing really hot the spark was as bright as a welder but firing cylinders 1and 2. A bad condenser ca sure do strange things.
