Starting With A Flywheel?

#1

Post by Bootstrapper »

Recently acquired my first 83 GL1100 and have been considering alternative starting methods:

1. Anyone successfully converted one of these to kick start? Sorry if I've missed the article somewhere.

2. Some old John Deere tractors had a hand crank flywheel and a cylinder pressure release valve. Idea was you would open the valve and spin the flywheel to build inertia without having to fight the engine compression, then close the valve and open the throttle. Is there any way to possibly modify a stock 1100 block to temporarily open the cylinders while push starting, or even go all the way and add a flywheel in lieu of an electric start or use the entire drive train as a flywheel while on the center stand?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a lot of trouble no matter the method. You'd be blazing a trail most likely and are probably not going to find many (if any) previous such attempts.

If it's just kick start you're after, it'd be a lot easier just to find a nice early GL1000 ('75-77) and call it a day. They came from the factory with kick start - a vestigial backup to the starter motor.

Renewng the electric start system would seem to be a lot less work than modifying it for push starting. Battery and starter technology have improved since the 1930s...

Back in the day There were quite a few engines that used Inertia starters to get started. you would wind up a small but heavy flywheel with a hand crank and then engage the unit to the crank to spin the engine. I would love to find one for kicks. Radial Aircraft and Tanks seem to be the most common ones. Even in a search they seem to be hard to find.

I know one can convert the later 1000's to kick start by changing/adding the appropriate parts from an early 1000. I'm not sure if it would be possible on the 1100. There was a thread fairly recently that discussed the parts needed...
