stock ignition coil vs after market

#1

Post by 5speed »

I've been googling coils as I'm pretty sure my 76 needs new ones.
It is very difficult to start in that it rolls over, kicks, rolls over, kicks some more and on and on until it eventually starts.
I'm not sure that is the only problem but as far as I know the coils and wires are original so new ones will be beneficial.
Is there any benefit to after market over oem?
I have experience with ACCEL and like their product..

Dyna coils work very well. No experience with Accel's motorcycle products though. If you've converted to electronic ignition the Neon coil mod sounds promising.

I'm happy with my Dyna coils...but what you're describing could also be low fuel level in the bowls. Sometimes it takes a few revs to get them back up to a "happy" level for starting. Common - and a MAJOR reason I converted to an electric fuel pump.

Try hanging an "aux" fuel bottle and feed it into the carb inlet bypassing the tank. See if it responds favorably. If it does, coils won't help.

I have a dynatek electronic ignition that I haven't installed yet. Automotive electrical isn't something I enjoy or am good at..so I'm more inclined to go the plug and play replacement. lol

Another coil to consider is the Nology ProFire coils: http://www.nology.com/profiremotor.html
The gents over on the CX500-650 turbo forum have used these successfully as well. Another option.
