There is an internal adjustment inside the rectangular metal box where the float arm is attached. It is covered in the FSM and even after the adjustment on these old gals it still isn't accurate by any means. I have played with both the GL1000 and GL1100 adjustments and never got anything that was satisfactory overall. You can improve it somewhat, yet I always use the trip meter reset to zero after I fill up as a more accurate gauge of my fuel level and range.

If your readings have changed from before you cleaned the tank then you may have bent something on the fuel rod assembly, as you should be getting a full reading when the tank is full, or you have deflected the float assembly to the top of its motion if the gauge is still out of the tank. The accuracy is diminished once the level start to drop below a certain level. Mine is usually showing towards the empty area on the gauge when there is still at least 1\3+ of gas still in the tank.

Bent the arm on the device in the tank until you're are happy. PS you can do it with the unit our of the tank..just hook up the wires, turn the bike on and move the arm to see how it reads. If you drop it to the bottom position it should show on or close to E = turn your reserve on..more accurate to run the tank empty add one gallon and put the unit in and see where it reads adjust arm to show just above E..

Ps bike on flat level surface...garage floor and the bike straight up like you were riding it..not on center stand..that tilts it a bit forward...but really not that much depends how accurate you want it.

I have adjusted a couple. there are specific values to set with an ohm meter in the book. Once you remove the sending unit you remove the tin cover and adjust the small slider on the rheostat. pretty easy really and worked out well for me.

A few years back, a member posted "fuel gauge is for amusement only". Seemed to agree with my observation. When I restored the bike I chucked the gauge. Like Flying900, I use the trip meter.

I've looked in the book and never seen any procedure for adjusting the sending unit, so obviously I missed it some where.
Please WF provide the name of the book and the page numbers.

Thanks in Advance action1

Wow, I'm extremely lucky, my gauge reads really well.

(Now that I've said this, the darn thing will most likely never work again...)
