How to mount rear turn signals

#1

Post by SRQ Mike »

Greetings! After several months without a NGL I'm now tinkering with a 1977 model. The previous owner had the rear turn signals mounted to an after market luggage rack and I'm attempting to put them back to stock. I think I have all the parts, but can't seem to figure out how to mount them. Any tips? Pictures?

Thanks in advance.

I removed the grab rail from my '76 build. Fabricated some brackets from 3/16" aluminum which mounted in place of the helmet locks. I mounted the turn signals to those brackets.

If you don't have the grab rail and can't locate one then Sirus Consolidated in Canada sells a reproduction chrome one at a reasonable cost for new.

Thanks! I got a new grab rail from David Silver Spares, but the mounting bolt on the turn signals is too large in diameter to fit through the hole in the grab rail. So, I may have incorrect turn signals. (Or was sent an incorrect grab rail). More to follow. Thanks again!

Are you sure you have rear turn signals and not front ones you are trying to mount? I had a box of parts with my project when I bought it and "no" lights installed on the bike. I finally figured out the front turn signals have two wires and the rears have one wire. On an extra set of rear lights I have, I found wires grounding the left rear and right rear light fixtures. I assumed because the lights are mounted in rubber on the grab bar, so I grounded the lights on mine as well.

No, I'm not sure. These units have two wires, but it appears that the ground wire was installed at some point by the owner who installed the rear rack. Is it difficult to find stock rear turn signals? I do have the rear mounting stems.

I have a pair from a '78 that are in great shape. The mounting studs are different, but are interchangeable if you have the mounting stems for the '77. Let me know if you are interested.

The fronts have a much larger mount so that maybe your problem. The fronts should be the two wire circuit as they have a dual filiment bulb consisting of the running light and turn signal filament. The rears are a single filament for the turn signal only.
You may have the wrong connector on there to adapt to the rear grab bar.

Still waiting on a couple of parts to try again on this.

In the meantime I was doing some odds and ends and found this taped to the underside of the door to the false tank. Amazingly good condition for 40 years-old!

You can always mount 78-79 rear signals. They are mounted on the taillight instead of the grab rail. (if your rail is missing)
