Stripped float bowl screw holes

#1

Post by 6adan »

I am rebuilding a set of GL1000 carbs and have several screws holes stripped. The original screws are M 4X0.7. My question is can I drill and tap and go to a 4.5X0.75 screw?

Thanks Dannie

Fix them right. Use the correct size time-cert. Never have to worry about them again. That's how I fix all the carbs that come in here.

Thanks robin, This is the holes I am having trouble with. Looks like in this hole the screw bottoms out before it gets tight on the bowl.

If it bottoms out someone put a screw that was longer than stock in there. Easy to change that.

Robin - I've used helicoil before but not time-sert. You think they work better? Easier to use maybe?

I use a lot of heli-coils for 6mm and larger. But the bowl screws being so small the time-cert is a better option IMO. The kit and inserts aren't cheap but they should hold up forever once installed.

Agreed. I've never regretted buying the kit. Once you are done, the screws will be riding in a steel insert. You can take them out and put them in a hundred times and never have another problem.

OK, have to ask why is tapping to one size larger..such a bad idea..or even same size but coarse threads? or even moving to standard thread if it's less of a jump up in size.

I could see that if one put in a sheet metal screw to fix it..which I have found on e some bikes I have purchased granted they were barn finds but still a screw metal screw!! But just a different size thread..shouldn't be that big of a deal if the spot has sufficient meat to handle it..maybe paint the head red so it's noticed the next time it comes out.

Some folks will always grab whatever is in arms reach to fix a problem. And others will seek out the proper part. Now I know not everyone has the proper stuff available in their town. But the internet is usually pretty close, as well as UPS. Proper planning makes the job go easier, and really helps the new owner when you pass it on. I have seen a lot of parts that have been "mickey moussed" together, and repairs became very dis heartening . I take pride in my work, and always try to do it right the first time.

I guess I am questioning why tapping out a bit is a bad thing(mechanically) if there is enough meat to handle the larger thread. The only down side I see is having a different thread size which if when reinstalling years later you mix up the bolts and trash the wrong threads if you are a gorilla and not paying attention..which is a concern. Of course trying to put a larger thread in usually won't even start!

Not saying you guys are wrong just wondering how big a deal it is.
