I am guessing this is a bike that has sat for a long time? You need to do a systematic approach or you are just going to chase this until you stumble on the fix. Start with the basics. Pull the plugs and see what they tell you. Can you throw another known good carb rack on there to eliminate those? Swapping the coils is OK but for me personally the carbs are faster. Trim back the plug wires a quarter inch or so and do a resistance check of the coils. Did you look at the intake valves when you had the rack off? Is there carbon build up there?

Before the bike would start good when cold but it would pop in both exhaust and then it would start running real bad and smoke real bad and then it would quit running. After it cooled down for several hours it would do the same thing. Replaced the coils and it dose not seem to pop like it did. We replaced with new plugs and it did the same thing, I tried adjusting the mixture screws with no change. When it quits the rear plugs are very wet. Any more ideas or something I missed please let me know.

Thanks Dannie

Robin, I will check for that, we had the air filter on when we started it.

The rear plugs are both on the same coil and wet plugs can be caused by no spark so I would start by looking at the ignition. Dyna modules have been known to fail.....

Yep. If they changed the coil and it still does it it sounds like a dyna module may be intermittent

Come to think about it that sounds a lot like when one of my Dyna modules failed a few years ago https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic ... 88#p529988

I found why it was running very rich, it was a bad float seat. It was still popping out of both sides so I pulled the Dyna off and put in a good set of points just to check the Dyna and it is still popping. I am open to all ideas?

More stuff I have done to this bike, I put the Dyna back on and checked the timing very close, checked and adjusted the valve clearance, put my Carbtune to check the sync and it is good, it dose have D7 plugs but I do not believe this would cause this popping. Any more ideas would be great.

Thanks Dannie

How is the air cut valve? You can get popping when they stop working. Exhaust leaks can do it too.

A little update. I thought while I was trying to find out what was causing the popping I would do the air jet mod and boy when I started the bike it sounded like someone was shooting a shotgun with even fire out the exhaust so I put the 110 air jets back in and now it is just back to the popping like it was. I also sprayed brake cleaner around the carbs with no change.

Sidecar I rebuilt the air cut valve when I did the carbs. I hooked a timing light up just to see if I could see anything when it popped and I saw the light would skip when it popped, like no fire for a sec and then back to normal. Any more ideas? I am ready to try most anything.

I get kind of a puffing sound out of my exhaust some times it will make a louder poping sound when I'm putting around the neighborhood at a constant RPM range. I've figured out that my fuel filter is plugging up, I guessed it's fuel starving my carbs and making it run lean, don't really understand the poping noise but it fixes it and it runs alot better.
Just throwing it out there.

How does it run on the highway? If it is starving for fuel just putting around the neighborhood it would have a hard time holding any speed on the open road.

At 20 MPH I'm at around 3k RPM and it will do it, it might be doing it on The highway and I just can't hear from the wind noise and ear plugs. When I'm on the highway the performance is kind of lackluster but not debilitating after I change the fuel filter it runs alot better.
I also notice that my clear fuel filter isn't full of fuel and I have bubbles In my fuel line after the pump (i have clear fuel line after the pump). My petcock seems to flow fine. Not sure where the air is coming from unless its pulling In from the hose connections, I don't have hose clamps on the fuel line before the pump
