Tank liner without tank removal

#1

Post by CHUCK HAHN »

Been contemplating how to do some POR 15 on my neighbors 79 GL1000 without removing the tank. My idea was to bend a stiff wire to reach the top of the tank and put a loop on it much like a gun cleaning attachment the patches go into. This way I could swab some coating to the roof of the tank. Getting to the rest of the tank is easy.

My concern is the pick up screens..how to not clog them. My thought was to apply the POR15 and then use the compressor to blow air down the holes where the petcock mounts to keep the screens opened up. Does this sound like a plausible scenario????

By the way, my 75 has been down for about a year and a half due to not enough time to actually drop the engine and do th clutch and primary chain. But someday soon I need to make this a priority as I sure miss riding the old girl.

One other note, this bike had sat since around 95. I got the rebuild kit from Randakk for the carbs and have it running off a gravity bottle. Ive replaced the timing belts etc etc and am down to new antifreeze and getting the tank servicable again. Just had the thought that the fule filter would catch anything once i cleaned the tank. So would I even need to coat the tank, or should it be done just to prevent a lot of rerusting on the inside???

If you clean the tank, and keep it full most of the time, a liner is not needed. But that is in a perfect world. I have bikes with liners, and bikes without. I keep an eye on the ones without, not so much on the ones with liners

I could swab some coating to the roof of the tank
you might get some on the "roof" that way but I'd be wondering where I didn't get it.
Pull the tank, clean it, coat it, put it back in....you'll sleep better. If it was your bike I'd say go for it. :)
1978GL1000 naked - kinda sadly gone. no bike at the moment.

Yeah, it's not that hard to pull the tank. You'll be sure to get full coverage.
