It probably wouldn't make too much difference, you're talking about two thousandths of an inch, but if there is a setting in the manual I can achieve relatively easily, I tend to stick to it. In my head, if the gap is more than the given setting, it would take longer, all be it a tiny amount, for the valves to work as they should. After all Mother Honda gives us the figures so we should stick with them.
Saying that, a lot of people here adapt and change a lot of the original bike, but I'm not confident enough do do to much of that.

.004" is the stock setting for the 1000. The 1100 is .004" intake and .005" exhaust. I set the 1000 exhaust to .005" also. Loose valves are happy, to an extent. Doesn't take much for them to be noisy though. Even .006". And that can be annoying.

Let me add here that you should not be happy with less than 150 psi compression. Think hard about this. As for that 170 number in Honda's 70s and 80s model manuals, yup, that us what they had brand new and a properly rebuilt will also, at sea level of course (x amount of compression is lost, of course, as altitude goes up). The last two Honda multis with aftermarket high comp pistons I recently built had 175 psi at my 5300 feet altitude, equal to more than 200 psi at sea level.
