Dyna timing problem

#1

Post by Wangthang »

I am having problems setting the static timing on a 77. I installed the dyna s, with 3 ohm coils. I hooked the two red wires from the module to the white/w green tracer from the flasher unit, per the diagram. Hooked the black wire with yellow collar to the yellow wire in the harness, and the white wire with blue collar from the module to the blue wire with a yellow tracer, in the harness. The problem is the test light stays on continuously when the engine is rolled over.

Did you remove the condenser? Just unplug it from the harness and leave it there.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Checked your gap between rotor and pickups? 0.020” to 0.040” I think.

Where do you have the tester plugged in? I always just take the plugs out, install a plug in the plug wire of the side I'm working, then ground the plug on the intake manifold bolt. Just roll it over watching for spark at the plug.

You do have to make sure you don't have the magnet at pickup before you start turning the engine over. And if using a test light it will stay on while the magnet is covering the rotor.

Unless the DynaS configuration has recently changed, there is one red wire, with an inline fuse.

If that one red wire, with its inline fuse, isn't providing 12+ power to operate those 2 modules on the DynaS baseplate, the test light will always stay illuminated.

Probably, the most common issue is that the DynaS baseplate assembly has a poor ground path connection where it mounts onto the cylinder head. Corrosion = resistance.

see the last paragraph under VOLTAGE TEST
Dynatek Publication http://www.powercommander.com/downloads ... naSTSG.pdf

While the DynaS timing adjustment procedure is being accomplished, if the baseplate retaining screws are too loose, the test light may not turn off, either.

I might suggest installing a temporary jumper wire between the -battery post and the DynaS baseplate, to establish a secure ground path connection, while adjusting the DynaS static timing.

this may be helpful, too: https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5720

Thanks for the replies. I am bad about wiring stuff per a print, but not verifying connectivity. As Octane mentioned in his how to section, the blue clamp on connector was not making contact on the module hot feed. Getting oh so close to putting fire in the hole.
