white smoke

#1

Post by Huskerfanadam »

need some advice. just bought my first Honda Goldwing (first bike ever actually) picked her up for $200. 1980. she runs, but is missing a lot of stuff and isn't running right. my biggest problem right now that I'm struggling with, is that my left side exhaust is just blowing out white smoke that reeks of gasoline. I've got the carbs off, and I'm going to go through and clean them and POSSIBLY go ahead and do the rebuild. (the bike had been sitting for 2 years) but before i go and put it all back together is there any advice? anything i could be missing? i am by no means a mechanic. I'm a youtube mechanic at best so my knowledge on this all is very slim.

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

I'm not a mechanic but it sounds like a headgasket .... maybe a compression check before you run it much ?

Replacing the head gaskets is a relatively easy job, probably a 6... if you can follow directions, and pay close attention to detail. You will need a torque wrench and a means to clean the old gasket material off the surfaces, as well as basic metric tools. Do a compression test before assuming that's your issue (Although it seems likely) just to be sure.

No real way to know, not knowing you. For me I'd say 1. But I've done several over the years. And to me if you have the heads off you don't just add new gaskets and O-rings. At a minimum you put in new valve seals. Check the valve spring pressures. Clean the valves and combustion chambers and intake/exhaust runners. Again those are all a 1, for me, on the difficulty scale.

But yeah, follow the directions in the manual. Have all the gaskets and O-rings you need before you start.

And, "don't forget about the small 6mm bolt at the bottom of the head".
