I believe they’re all Gl 1E, the 4 indicates fourth year of production, so it’s a 78. I think 77 carbs had two varieties. One was a 764a version of the 77 carbs, but most had 769 carbs.

77 WING, 1200 engine with 77 heads, cams, gl1100 foot pegs, Magna V65 front end, 764A carbs, [-gone Suzuki M109 monoshock--, replaced with gl1100 shocks] gl 1200 swing arm, gl1500 final drive, wheel and rear brakes Valkyrie seat, Meanstreak tank, Sportster pipes, Power Arc ignition off crank.

78's had two versions of carbs... the first half of the production had the 78 carbs and the second half was the 79 carbs. I believe the 79's engine #'s and VIN's start GL 1 E 41.....

based upon the fact hat Honda used two different carbs on the 78's, either set should work... there was another thread where someone had a 79 with a mixed set (part 78/part 79) that is not a good idea. Basically, Honda de-tuned out the "varoom" factor and made the bikes have better emissions and better touring MPG from 75 until 79. However, as previously mentioned every year had different cam timing etc. so having year specific carbs will always work best

There were early and late model carbs for 78. The new epa rules went into effect 1 January 78 and anything built after that required the newer leaner carbs. So the 78 models built before 31 December of 77 came out with 769A carbs and the bikes built after the first of the year came out with the 771A and those are the same as the 1979 models. The Primary Air Jet was bumped from a 120 to a 140 and the slow air jet was bumped from a 120 to a 130.

yes, mine, built in 4/78 has 771a carbs.... wow that means I could REALLY "varoom" it up with a set of 769a carbs... imagine the power!
