Air cutoff valve Oring issue on a 75' GL

#1

Post by elslimdiablo »

I am having a reoccurring issue with the air cutoff valve oring that is nearest to the air cleaner getting sucked into its intake port. I haven't had this issue before. Originally I used a dab of grease to hold them in place during install, then after about a tank of fuel the bike develops a slightly rough idle ( vacuum leak). I started to pull the carbs out of the bike when I find the O ring sucked in the port. I cleaned off any grease residue and used a light coating of aircraft sealer. Last night, same thing happens. This morning I pull the o ring out and put it back in place only to have it happen while driving it from my garage bay to the parking spot. The air cleaner is clean and clear. Not sure why it is doing this. Should I just clean it all up again and just use Hondabond ?

it sounds like the air valve isn't clamping down all the way when you tighten the screws.
I would determine if that is happening and why before I stated adding goop to the o ring that quite possibly could get sucked into the valve.

It shouldn't make it into the carbs due to the "flame screens" in the intake. I'll take another look at the mating surfaces when I get it home.

I'll take a picture when I get it apart tonight. Hopefully my garage is not at the same 104 degree heat index that my shop is!

Had a quick minute when I got in to pull the valve off and get a shot. I'll go back out after the sun goes down and check the straightness of the mating surfaces. I didn't see anything blatantly obvious causing an interference.

The same as the bottom, except for the little bit of residue from the aircraft sealant I put on the orings to keep them in place. I have Dykem on the valve face now. When it dries, I'll mount it and see if there are any gaps.

very strange if both surfaces are smooth..wonder if there is crude in one of the screw holes that is keeping it from tightening the valve down

There should be a small recess for the orings to sit in. Perhaps the early bikes didn’t have this? Or someone planed it off?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
