OEM float valves

#1

Post by chewy999 »

I came across an article recently, not sure where, but think it was from Mike Nixon, the Carb Guru, who said you should ALWAYS use genuine Honda float valves and housings. The problem with that is the cost. Over here your looking at about £80 each, which seems a bit excessive.
I did find some here, https://www.partsnmore.com/parts/honda/gl1100/?filters at the top of page 3 which claim to be OEM, which I thought was as good as original. Can anyone say whether they have purchased these with good results? These are only $10 each, and even with postage, I could swap all four for the price of one original!

I don't see where they claim those are OEM.

That said, I've tried after market float assemblies. It is hit and miss whether they work or not. Not worth my time to take the chance. But you do have to tell the customer before just installing them and adding $100 to their bill. It is the only fix, and if you do one you should do all four.

That all said I rarely need to replace OEM assemblies. One set of 1000 carbs and one set of 1100 carbs in the last year. So it isn't a common failure.

I just did a rebuild for a 1000, I got all 4 for what you are paying for 1. They were Honda parts. Have a look at http://www.partspitstop.com .

I cut this from the original web page. Maybe I'm missing something, but to me they are saying the item is, 'High quality - Made in Japan OEM'.

If that was a UK site and it wasn't OEM, then I'd complain to advertising standards, as it is at the very least, misleading!

Thanks luckyEddie for that, had a quick look, and the 'kits' are $40ish (£30) which is cheaper than here. Will have to look harder.

was the L80 for the whole set of four, or each? If so, they are a lot cheaper for Honda ones in the states. In which case, is it possible to buy them and have them shipped

It's £80 each!!!! The number I'm using for the 1980 1100 is 16011PK1005, which lists it as a 'valve set'. Postage is often a problem but sometimes it can work out cheaper. The worst example was I was once quoted $80 postage for a small label which would fit in an ordinary envelope, needless to say I didn't bother.

What I really need is for some kind soul in the states to buy them and put them in a padded envelope and send them to a poor retired fireman!

Yeah, I read it so quick I missed the Made in Japan "OEM" part. Still can't think those are though for the price.

Done some research. The items from Partsnmore are after market as suspected. I then found some on flea bay from Germany which are branded 'Tourmax'. The company said they are made to the same quality as original, but some reviews of Tourmax, including on here, are a bit worrying.
Cheapest genuine ones I've found are from the states but from a Honda car dealer. Can't remember the name, but beggars the question, will a part number for a Honda car be the same for a bike? It will be EXACTLY the same item, correct?
