got bucked off...again.

Post by 5speed »

exact same scenario as last summer.
Slowing down, going into a pretty sharp left hand corner, hit one of those deep narrow bumps and it either stood the bike up straight on me or threw it to the right because one minute I'm in the center of the lane, next minute I'm in the gravel heading for the woods so I laid it down and bailed off.
It slid on it's left side then must have flipped over on to it's right side, slid, stood up on both wheels because when I stopped sliding it was going across the road, into a logging road, into a big mud hold and sort of leaned over and stopped.

Mangled the right crash bar, some light scratches on the timing belt cover and it's muddy. that's it. Road it home..again.
I banged up my left hand a bit, tore a hole in my brand new mess jacket, ripped the watch off my wrist, destroying the strap and I have a small hole in my jeans.

So..my question is...should I be checking something on the suspension..is there something that would cause the bike to react like that.
The guy that was behind me last year was behind me again this time and he said it was exactly like the first time. Like I got bucked off the bike.

He also said the back tire looks like it's flat. I have 40 psi in it.

Glad you're OK and the bike will ride again.

I'd put it up on a cycle jack with both ends hanging and start looking for anything amiss. Go over everything. Head stem slop. Swingarm pivot play. Shock mounts. Wheel bearings. Closely inspect tires and rims. If you don't find anything, slow down and pick your line carefully on the back roads.

...and replace that engine guard. (Just in case lightning strikes thrice).

that's the thing..I wasn't going fast either time or didn't think I was. coincidentally..it was the same road..just further along..
So I'm staying off it. lol
Is 40 psi not enough pressure in the back tire? Its' what the manufacturer recommends.

I was hanging on the the handlebars with a good grip..I'm not one to go into corners holding on with the throttle hand only.

40 lbs is what I run .... certainly enough .... sounds to me like the rut 'grabbed' your front tire ....

Glad you’re OK

tks Gord.
my pride is taking a beating. :drunk
just came in from washing the mud off it and I can't see any damage other then the crash bar. what I thought were scratches on the timing belt cover was mud.
it is unbelievable that I have gone down on the bike twice and it has been ride able both times with minimal damage.
I looked at the back tire while I was sitting on the bike and the outside edge of the tread was almost touching the floor of the garage.
I'm wondering now if it has a slow leak. I checked it before my first ride but haven't check it again as I have't ridden it more then a few times on short runs.
going to check it here in a bit.

Glad your ok, and seems like your spirits are good too. +1 on checking suspension as mentioned above, also how is the damping in forks and shocks? If either is not damping, a big bump can turn into a big launch.

Not an expert, just a good ol’ flatlander now but your description sounds like a high side, or as RB suggested. Probably the same thing. Google it and watch YouTube, it scares me to death watching it. The first time I watched one and it showed bike after bike just standing up and throwing the rider off, it made me not want to ride. Be thankful it wasn’t worse and Go to church Sunday.

Pretty good explanation here: https://www.stevemunden.com/sides.html
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I've had a rear tire go flat while I was riding, two up in fact on an 1800. I noticed the handling got a little squirrely but not bad until I had to stop at a red light then it became very obvious I had a flat. Couldn't go another inch and had to push the bike into an adjacent gas station. Thing is it was quite rideable until I had to stop. I would check the rear tire pressure for sure, you probably already have. That was with a radial tire with pretty stiff sidewalls. As a matter of fact its the only flat I've ever had while riding and since then I carry a little air compressor and a plug kit just to get me to where I can replace the tire should it ever happen again.

Well, I've been talking to a friend that is a former provincial motocross champion x's 2. He is going to stop over tomorrow and help me check the shocks, forks, etc.
I checked the tire pressure in the rear tire...12 psi. it's a wonder I didn't roll the tire off the rim.
To look at it without me sitting on it..it looks good.
Another lesson learned. Check tire pressure religiously.

Without knowing the brand the model would be hard to interpret.
