GL1000 headlights, settle a argument

#1

Post by SnoBrdr »

Did the GL 1000, US models ever come with a replaceable bulb as opposed to a sealed beam.

This is an issue on another board where one party says he can just drop in a LED H4 bulb.

I have had my bike since new and it has the original sealed beam in it.

Sealed beam on my '76. Now that I think about it, I think my '84 has a sealed beam as well.

But it also used a standard.... 7 inch light? I think? Honda used them on nearly any bike of theirs with a round light, so retrofitting a later model lens with replaceable bulb was both easy to do and, I'd imagine, pretty common. So I can see where the confusion can arise.

I wish I had the replaceable bulb as I had been looking into going LED and didn't want to spend all the $$ on a reflector/lens as well as the bulb.

I recently broke an '82 CX500 and it had what appeared to be a factory 7" round lamp that took a H4 capsule. Those normally go for around $20 - $30 on Ebay if it's something you want to try.

Yes and obviously they are wrong unless the dealer swapped mine out in 78.

Which I doubt.

you can still get the glass casing for the H4 bulbs from Honda. On my 78 the OEM had lost its shine after 40 years

A lot of folks changed out the original H4 housings for sealed beams (I believe the number is 6024) due to H4 availability back in the day.

Don't know, running change sometime during the '78 model year maybe? My '79 has an H4 setup.
