1976 LTD Shelter Cover Badge versus Gl1000A

#1

Post by hybrid455 »

I have not been on in a long time but I have not given up on my projects though there have been a lot of distractions over the last year and a half. I have been working on details a lot more lately. I am building these bikes to ride not show but I do want them to be as accurate and original as possible given funds and parts availability. Most recently I discovered that I have 2 styles of badges for the shelter covers. The LTD badges (top) look like 78 badges. Is this correct? I have identified pictures of LTD's on the internet wearing these badges as well. If so are the 78 badges the same? Are the pins located the same? The other badges (bottom) have holes in them revealing the paint color through the holes. Should the LTD have this style as well or did this have to do with the special LTD badging? Thank you in advance for helping me to clarify this!

The "top" badge in your pic is what my LTD tank panel has on it. No holes!
My panels and badges are original.

I think the 78 may be the same style but larger overall with pins that are spread apart more. I got burned on Ebay for a badge like this that was represented as being for a 76. From what I have been able to observe in pictures some of the LTD styling carried over to 77 like the seat and black face gauges. I have seen the 77 in pictures with both sets of badges I have pictured. I have checked part numbers and they appear to have superseded several times before becoming obsolete. The last number available appears to be the same for all 76-77 Gl100A including LTD while original numbers differed. It would give me options for locating used parts if I could determine whether anything else used the same badge as the LTD. I need at least one, 2 if they were really nice. Mine suffer from delamination of the gold plating and one has a broken pin.

Same here on my '76 LTD. Top badge in picture, no holes.

The Honda microfiche for the '76 is very confusing to say the least. I was only able to find the microfiche for a '76 on the CMSNL.COM site, one of my last resort parts sources. It shows these part numbers for the '76 LTD side shelter emblems:

(R) 87121-371-1980
(L) 87122-371-1980
and also this:
87121-371-1660
and this
87121-371-000

Yup, four different part numbers for the side shelter emblems for a '76 LTD. Confusing to say the least. But to me it seems that the original part numbers were the top two on the list above, and they were eventually superseded by the last one, 87121-371-000.

The side shelter emblem part number for a standard (non-LTD) '76 is 87121-371-000. That seems like the part that they are all eventually ending up at.

Now, the '78 GL1000 is a different deal all together. The side shelter emblems for a '78 are listed as:

(R) 87121-431-670
(L) 87122-431-670

I'm betting that those are the ones shown in the bottom of your picture, the ones with the holes in them.

Perhaps someone with a '78 can chime in and say what they've got.

Below this thread are threads and posts relative to the discussion. "Placerville" one of our illustrious, past members listed a couple of links.
These are reproductions but may assist you with your issue. This link in particular seems to be promising if they're still around and available. Unfortunately, they're in Australia...

Thanks for all your research, I came up with the same thing. Confusing, No doubt. In the absence of hard data I started scouring the web for pictures, especially magazine pics from ads that pictured unmolested machines. What I found was that the 1975-76 Gl1000A had the badges with the holes, they are pretty easy to distinguish with the red, yellow and blue bikes as the colors can be seen through the holes in the badge. The 76 LTD does not have the holes nor do the the 77's. The 78 looks nearly identical to the LTD and the 77 in a picture but in reality I believe it is slightly larger and the mounting pins are spaced differently. I got burned as I said before. If anyone needs one I have 1 super clean badge for a 78-79 I think. My belief is that over time everything superseded to the 77 part number and that the badges with the holes were the first to become obsolete. Right now I feel pretty good about putting the ones with the holes on the sulfur yellow bike and trying to source some badges for a 77 as anything that says LTD is automatically outrageously more money. I will report back if I am able to confirm all of this.

Thank you. After looking at this site I think that not only the 77 may be the same as the LTD but the 78 and 79 as well. The badge that I purchased believing it to be for the LTD but was not appears as though it might be for a GL1100. Have you or do you know anyone that has purchased from link you shared?

I found this on Ebay.

They are saying that the badge they have available with the holes is for LTD, while it probably fits I now believe this to be incorrect. They show other emblems that resemble the LTD (no holes) that are supposed to be for different models. They too are in Australia but have an OK feedback score. If I were to purchase from them I would have the added benefit of Ebay and PayPal protection. I messaged them to see if they had the emblem for the LTD.

Those part numbers are wrong. There should not be a 1 in the -1980. -980 is the LTD model of the -371 Goldwing GL1000

These two links lead to the same family owned company in Australia. I purchased 2 shelter cover emblems with holes for the yellow bike. They are virtually identical to the OEM emblem with holes pictured in this thread. They are noticeably heavier and will require some careful massaging, bending to match the shape and contour of the shelter cover. There are instructions that came with them for doing so. They did combine shipping and the shipping was relatively fast considering they came from the land down under. Not inexpensive at $112.00 for 2 including shipping but not outrageous. I'm satisfied.

So what to do with the LTD Badges? (no holes see pic earlier in thread) They don't make a replica of this badge that I've been able to find. Every one I've found used either by themselves or on a shelter cover has damaged plating in varying degrees. I was wondering if anyone has re-plated their originals. Anyone have a recommendation? I know there are some guys on this forum that restore bikes, what are you doing to get around the issue of plating damage on OEM emblems?
